I knew someone would ask about the link, which one do you want? I'll try and perform a search to see if I can find it for you. There were so many I can't remember which was which :)

The ones with the wet contact patchs at various states of inflation you mention just before my last post

I may have that Michelin site bookmarked, let me see if I can dig it up for you. In the meantime, look at the very similar pictures at this site (I don't agree or disagree with what this site says is "right", they just happen to have a few Michelin wet weather pictures.

Sorry but I have a small disagreement with your conclusion about what the article proves. The extreme case for high pressure is what they call a tire with the "correct" inflation pressure of 35 psig. It's a Hydroedge tire I believe so they could have inflated it to 44 psig but did not. The artiicle only illustrates that you'll get the correct contact patch by inflating to the correct pressure, in this case, 35 psig and that underinflation reduces the contact patch. The article doesn't imply that if the correct pressure is good then more is better or that more will not affect the contact patch. That's just not a logical conclusion to make from the facts presented. It's too bad they didn't cover that in their article, but they didn't.

In fact because they call 35 psig the "correct" pressure more than once, the article is more likely to imply that just inflating it to the max pressure the tire can handle is "incorrect". Yes there are a few of these views of the contact patch taken from beneath the car through a glass plate. To my knowledge they never illustrate what happens when you inflate beyond the "correct" pressure to the max stated on the tire.

I checked the tire pressure yesterday in the car I picked up the prior day and drove home 130 miles at speeds up to 69 mph. I didn't have time to hunt for my guage before leaving home Friday morning and the salesman did say they were set when I asked. I have to agree that there is a large safety margin. The fronts and right rear were all at 39 but the left rear was 48! I didn't notice anything in handling nor ride, but given I just got the car I didn't have a feeling for 'normal'. They are now set at 38/36
