Y Do Prius drivers drive like their 80 years old?

Thank you for your offer... I may do that... it's sorta looking like the end of June is the nearest I can get a half a day to do something... if I have the time to do it, and you ain't busy, I just may take you up on that one Bra.

I've noticed locally that AT&T has several Prii as company vehicles as well.

I drive the speed limit 99% of the time and have on occasions adjusted to drive with the flow of traffic in some circumstances. There are times that traffic can be heavy enough that I will speed up a bit so as not to impede the flow and become a hazard. For example, I-35 outside of Dallas can be that way at times.

When time of day and traffic allow, I will frequently drive slower than the limit while hypermilling but this is almost always in the wee hours of the morning on state type roads, not Interstates.

How does an 80-year-old drive, anyway? You'd think that with that much driving experience they might know something we younger folks don't.

 

I generally pay at least as much attention to the conditions and traffic flow as I do to the speed limit. I've certainly had my share of tickets over the years, but none in a long time. Driving a Prius instead of riding a motorcycle is no small part of that, though I suppose maturity might enter into it.

Driving significantly faster or slower than the general flow of traffic creates a hazard. On road trips to California, I can pretty much ignore the signs, since obviously everyone else does, too. The lack of 'slower traffic keep right' behaviour is disconcerting, but I get used to it after awhile. The drivers seem to get progressively faster the further South I travel.

Last night, I drove like the old man I'm not, because I was tired and on dark, unfamiliar roads in heavy rain. People were passing me, but others were going even slower, so I was surprised to find my speed was less than posted.

My grandfather's 94 and he still doesn't drive like an old man. Never has.

Speed limit =/= mandatory driving speed. Speed limit = maximum speed it is safe to drive at.

Yes, I adjust for traffic (it's pretty much impossible to follow the 55 MPH speed limit on I-95 heading around the CT-NY border, for example, cause everyone else is doing at least 75), but whenever possible I drive the speed limit, or a little under. I'd say it's one of the main reasons I've had lots of near misses but no accidents ever, in 15 years of driving.

 

Let me turn this around and ask why a slower Prius that's clearly not blocking faster traffic or in heavy traffic greatly offends some?

I just defined a driver that is in no way a problem to the faster drivers, yet on both the internet and on the freeways, some are still incensed.

I don't feel like I drive like 80 y.o., but I AM more conscious of not wasting fuel. I drive at least the limit at all times, assuming traffic allows.

But what I find absurd are those who drive high-consumption vehicles who feel the need to "show up" Prius drivers. I can't tell you the number of tiimes some extended-cab, 4 wheel drive pickup ROARS past me...IN A HURRY TO REACH A RED LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. I always catch up to them at the light.

I could drive all day on the gas used in that one full throttle blast...

 

Well I'm closer to 80 than I am to 25 and my wife considers me a hazard on the road.

Does the 25y.o. OP believe the same should apply to oldsters say after the age of 70; reverse graduated licensing?

 

Ok, I tend to speed in my Prius, 40 years of bad habits. I am usually 10% over until I get to 70 then I stay at 70. (Aerodynamics is against you over 60)

10% over typically means I pass about as many vehicles as pass me, but I live in a very agricultural area, so much of what I pass is no where near the speed limit, and does not fit in one lane.

Smooth cruising, never hit the brakes, plan ahead.

 

Perhaps it's significant as to whether she considers you a hazard 100% of the time or just when she's with you.

 

I've found leaving the house 4-5 minutes earlier than normal helped not notice slower-to-accelerate drivers, regardless what they drive.

 

You did graduate work and confused "their" with "they're"? I assume it wasn't English composition.

I could have worded the title clearly without texting.

Why are you suprized at the strong responses?....there was a fair amount of emotionally charged words like 80-year olds, "idiots", etc., which suggests the motive was less to discuss and more to argue, regardless of your actual intentions.

This was entirely predictable.

 

All the Subarus that I tend to notice are going at least 40mph over the limit - most of them have big turbos bolted on. Must be the crowd I make acquaintances with.
