WOW the prius nav is even more useless than I thought!

Some people's standards are a bit lower than others, I personally like to get what I pay for...in this case I didn't.

 

If the person is in your address book all you have to do is hit the voice button on the steering wheel and say "Call -Persons Name-" then you get the selection for which number if there is more than one for them. Quite easy, do it all the time.

BTW its not about being with Toyota, its about learning their quirks and figuring out the response, just like I've done with all on board Navs.

 

If you are using Outlook and use the File As instead of a category it will work as I have all contacts by first name also. Hope that's an option for you....

The distracted driver is usually only one fraction of the equation. It's the other drivers and occupants also harmed that I think is also on the "protected" list.

Signing a waiver? Not gonna happen.

Motion sensor bypass or another NAV HU are probably the only options I see working for you.

Frustrating? Absolutely.

 

Looks like you need the navigation speed overide in the PriusChat shop or the one here Prestigious Society » Navigation and Video Enhancement Module » Prestigious Society which does not use the switch shown but uses the volume buttons on the steering wheel to turn it on and off (very classy, plug and play, the system is about (L) 1½ x (W) ¾ in. x (H) ½ in. but expensive). Then the Nav will have nothing greyed out and you can even have dvd playing on the premium when moving. Just please don't drive behind me!!!

 

The passenger seat detects a passenger doesn't it, that's how the vehicle knows to activate the passengers air bag, at very least the nav should be operable when there's a passenger in the car.

People have been distracted while driving long before the first GPS sat. was launched. Distracting devices also include the radio, cupholders & the mirror when used to apply makeup or comb hair.

Garmin, TomTom & Magellan haven't been litigated out of business so I'm not buying auto makers claims that disabling the unit is a safety feature.

Saturday I went on a trip where the only address I had was an intersection. My Garmin couldn't find it but brought up a list of numbered addresses. I picked one but it wasn't close. I didn't even think to try Toyota's.

Going home I used both. The Garmin directions included more turns, some needless. I still say both units are about equally retarded.

 

No one ever said it's a safety feature. What it is is a feature to reduce exposure to litigation. Garmin, TomTom, and Magellan have decided to take the risk. Toyota has not.

You purchase an updated disc and they're usually not cheap.

 

I have the Basic, 6" Entune Nav unit, an I give it an A for audio features, it's Bluetooth a B+, it's Nav a C-, the Entune apps an F and voice recognition an F.

The Nav seems to work ok if you pull over and enter an address that it can find. But when I had to take my son to a dentist in a nearby town, the Nav couldn't find the address, and the building is at least 30 years old, on a main street.

I very strongly encourage WAZE, which is an awesome Nav app for iPhone an Android. It provides turn-by-turn, and it has extraordinary traffic routing. On my iPhone, it's turn-by-turn works through the Bluetooth speaker. Way better than a Garmin. And it's free.

 

All carmakers need to get on the ball with their NAV systems. It's not just limited to Prius and Toyota.

The general problem is even with degrees of better or worse functionality, for useability, there are far better, and far, far cheaper off the shelf options.

Since in most cases, owners are being charged huge amounts for the upgrade for these so called "Premium" systems, it's ridiculous that most people value their useage "less" than a $160 Garmin.

 

I use Waze also. Works perfect every time I didn't care that my car had a Nav unit. What I was interested in is the audio system being a decent factory system that I don't have to screw around with aftermarket car audio to have decent tunes.

I decided to try this today. Started Entune on iPhone, started car, hit voice button and said "find nearest ATM" and it gave me a full screen Of ATMs within 0.5 miles. This was suburban Richmond, a less target rich environment than Orlando for sure. I wonder what is different.

 

Looks like you were using Entune paired with your phone but hard to tell from the OP is he was using the same set-up.
