Would I be crazy to get a used Hertz rent to own '13 Prius with under 40,000 miles for 18k??

your $3k price difference doesn't make sense to me. the 2013 for $18k WITH 40,000 miles on a rental Prius is insane. and what is "rent to own" that you mentioned? buy NEW ! unless the 2014 Prius for $21k NEW was BS from a salesman and not reality.

Why? If I never go over 200k with my cars, chances are you won't get much out of me for free :)

Used to buy 10-year old cars with 100,000 miles on them for peanuts and then try to drive them for a few more years and 40-50,000 miles, usually but not always successfully. Learn an awful lot about car maintenance and repair that way.
Looking forward to see just how far this Prius will go whilst maintaining 50+ mpg; should be interesting.

My cousin use to be a mechanic for a "pro" race car team. They would trailer the race car all over, but would rent cars for the "crew" to get from place to place. He would so BRAG about what these experienced mechanics would do, to their poor rental car! They would "do their best" to make sure it was WELL abused, to the point of near death, before giving that rental car back. They would also change rental cars, for each leg of their trip, so this abuse was done, over and over again on many cars during the race season. They would pride themselves in making sure the abuse was not physically evident, so they had no problems with the rental car agencies. But, oh man, the stories he would tell. He also said, it was common amongst the other race car crews to brag to each other about what they had done recently to their rental car.... Pretty juvenile, but true! I would NEVER buy a rental car after hearing those stories....

Can you share some of the abuse stories?

I got my 2010 from the dealer for 18k and the odometer was at 18,760 miles . Has navigation and leather.I feel that was better deal then the rental.yes the rental is a 2014 but it has more miles by far and mine was a one owner vehicle and being a 2010 with 18k miles is has not been driven very much at all.
