Working towards 1000 miles on a tank

You do know that taking two tanks to do it doesn't count right?

Anyways, GL to you. It's too hilly around here to P&G. I'd be in P for .5 miles and G for like .1. I don't think that'd work too well.

Also, on the tank I'm on right now I'm not even bothering to look at the consumption screen till I fill up. I'm still hypermiling it, I just not watching it. The one time I looked at it, more to see if my engine was still on while I was coasting, I thought I caught a a glimpse of 65.x MPG, but I'll only know once I fill up at 500 miles.

I've also decided to fill up at 500 mile intervals now, until I can go 750 miles a tank that is. I feel it's easier to remember a round number. That and it means I'll fill up my tank when I get my oil changed every 7500 miles. I'm weird like that.

I wish I could get those 70+ MPG tanks, but alas... I don't think my '02 Prius has it in it. Those newer models are just superior.

Wow! Living in flatland Florida, I am getting 500 to 550 miles or so a tank, but you are awesome! My only question is running on low fuel. Don't you worry about hurting or damaging the fuel injector? I was brought up (or brainwashed) in beliving that running a car too low on gas will really damage the fuel injector. So my 500 to 550 mile tanks are as soon as I start "blinking" or before due to that train of though. Any comments?

1) Do you have an EBH (Engine Block Heater) If yes, do you use it everyday?

2) Do you have an EV switch installed? If yes, how do you use it.

3) Do you have a Scanguage or CanView or other device? If yes, how do you use it?

4) What is the average length of your trips.

5) What do you do in the first 5 minutes to help with the warm up cycle.

6) Could you briefly describe what your pulse technique is. Specifically how do you set your pulse.

7) Anything else that gets you this MPG.

what the F? geez i live in north phoenix where there are stoplights like every half mile to catch me and i cant seem to get out the 48 MPG's i try to get the avg up when i take access roads which are one mile in between stops but it is considered luck to go two miles without stopping

I share your frustrations pingman - I have a similar commute.

I only have 12k on the clock so maybe the ICE is not broken in yet but with all the P&G I can , no arrows, using EV as much as possible, I'm on 69.8 UKmpg at the moment.
Although I get close I've never had a 600mpg tank yet.

There is another thread on PC at the moment about looking at mpg not as how many mpg you can do but how many gallons you consume say, in a month. Its more realistic I'm thinking.
I fill up when I get to the last pip and although UK models don't have the bladder I put in around 9.5 UK gallons

I have to say that I find what VABeachPrius is doing is quite frankly astonishing -does NASA know :lol: .
I'm so impressed - but he must have, not ideal, but PERFECT conditions.
I guess they are things like long flats, few lights, good temperatures, little traffic, no tailgaters, no A/C.
Am I missing anything ?

 

congrats beach, if you can do that where I live (British Columbia Canada) i'll give you 100 bucks. I have way too many one laners + aggressive drivers its just a fear for my life when I try to coast. I wish the goverement would build roads made just for hypermiling!

Chris, how do you manage to only get 25-35 in summer with the block heater? You should be easy north of 45-50 MPG. Maybe it's that warm-up routine you do, might not be the best for early MPG.

Thank you for responding. I have not heard of pulse and glide at those speeds before. I had always heard of pulse and glide at 40 and 30. I will try it at the slower speeds.

I have learned a lot it the 3 months that I have had the pri. I am now able to consistently get 71-72 MPG on my commute to work and back. I am hoping to refine it even more and approach 80 with the addition of an EBH and refining my techniques and route selection.

My circumstance is different here in the Cincinnati area then in Virginia Beach. I must navigate several 500 ft. elevation change hills on my way to and from work. Also there is one bridge that goes over the river on my commute that is interstate. If I don't use that bridge I have a 5 mile detour to go around. Out of my driveway I have to go up a steep 220 ft. elevation change hill right as I exit the driveway. Almost every time I have a 3 bar green or 2 bar purple battery when I get to the top of that hill. Needless to say it has been a learning experience. Many may have similar situations as I do. I am trying to pick people brains and use the techniques that work for my situation.

Anyway thanks for the info.

P.S. My wife has always been after me to "slow down" and smell the roses. She has finally got her wish. I think she may be having second thoughts.

also, I'm with Dr. Fusco, my pulses are usually up to 40 mph then down to 30 (sometimes 28 or 25 traffic allowing).. i also find that when my water temp is around 175 the ICE won't shut off when i feather the pedal, but when the temp gets up to 184-188 it will..... hmmmmmmm.....
