It costs more to support the older and having consumers endorse is more effective (saves money too) than advertising.

Or force subscription on users. I can think of a few. With security programs, Norton Internet Security for example, subscription seems semi-justifiable...ish. Other's, say Photoshop, I'm just glad I got in before they switched over.

It can be more than one thing. My impression is that MS hopes that W10 on the desktop will encourage people to stay with MS products and services when it comes to notebooks, tablets, phones, watches and cloud services.

    As usual, imitating Apple.

"If it's free then you are the product" has graduated to an internet meme. Not that memes are such excellent indicators of importance. But they are catchy.

I take some comfort in those that are not; and, I trust Google to treat the data as an aggregate. Can you say the same for MS ?

There has been a fair amount of attention to the data mining of Windows 10. If you do some Web poking, you can find ways to circumvent a lot of the collection. Don't have W10 yet, but I will be working to defeat their collection efforts.

I survived Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1 so far without upgrading. However, I am forced to upgrade to Win10 Pro this week. Finally I can take advantage of my 6 GB RAM that I had for 6 years.
I Bought a Seagate 8TB USB drive 2 months ago. It doesn't work with XP. Talked to Seagate. They're clueless as why it. They kept telling me to check Disk Management. That's the first thing I checked.

After much research, the issue lies in both SW and HW. The new drive's SATA to USB board lacks the 4K to 512 byte emulation. The drive's partition style is GPT, not MBR. No way in hell XP would recognize it. I have no problems with their older 4TB drives because it has both 4K to 512 byte emulation and MBR partition style. Further research shows that the retail box that works with XP looks like this. Retail box that won't work with XP looks like this with 200GB one drive promo.

My last resort was to use it as NAS drive. I bought a Netgear AC1750 router to replace my aging DLink 655. The setup worked and my XP was able to access the 8TB drive in full capacity. The problem I have is slow transfer rate. I would be happy if I got 60+MBps. Sadly I only got about 18-22MBps. That's slower than USB 2.0 speed. It also made a lot of corrupt files.

I finally caved and decided to upgrade the OS. In preparation for the upgrade, I bought a Samsung EVO 850 250GB SSD and dug out the Windows 8 Pro that I bought back in 2012 when it was $49.99. I ripped the package up like I'm breaking the "In Case Of An Emergency" glass.

I installed Windows 8 Pro on the SSD and right away ran into the freaking windows activation problem. I was pissed. This is a freaking retail and it won't activate? After more research, it turned out that the product key is an upgrade key. I don't get why it didn't work since I have XP already on my machine. After some registry hack, I got the OS activated. Now on to updating to Windows 10 Pro.

I updated the OS and the Win10 icon never showed up in the notification area. Come to find out that only Win 7 and Win 8.1 have the upgrade notification. Win8.0 has to be manually updated.

I downloaded Win 10 Pro and burned it to DVD. The installation had the same problem, product key wouldn't work. I tried again but this time I used the option "Upgrade this machine". It proceeded to download windows 10 again. After the upgrade completed, I boot to Windows 10. It looks pretty. I checked the C drive and to my surprise, it used almost 40GB for the bare OS. I knew there were a lot of abandoned setup files and other orphaned files left over in the C Drive.

I decided to do a fresh install from the Win10Pro DVD that I downloaded. After the installation, the bare OS on the C drive is only 13.5GB. I'm satisfied but still have issues with unactivated windows due to product key. After registry hack, I got Windows 10 Pro activated. I installed Classic Shell to make everything as close to XP as possible.

I decided that my XP had too many programs and settings that I just can't let go. The solution is to use both at the same time and migrate the XP settings and programs to Windows 10 whenever I have time. I decided to port my XP to virtual machine so I could use it within Windows 10. First, I tried using this method so I could boot my XP physical drive in VirtualBox. Too complicated and It didn't work. After researching, converting physical drive into virtual drive is much easier and less chance of VB corrupting my XP OS. At this point, I can still boot into XP. I tried VMware vCenter Converter using numerous settings. None would boot completely in VB. I tried Disk2vhd and finally was able to boot at least half way before VB froze. I knew that the lacked of guest addition drivers is what preventing it from booting completely. I reset VB and was boot into safe mode. I installed guest additions and hoped for the best. This time, it booted completely.

Now, I'm running my original Windows XP inside Windows 10 Pro with full access to my 8TB drive.

cproaudio, you're scaring the cr@p out of me. MS is alienating users with this nonsense. It's come to the point they can't GIVE their operating system away, not good.

It's intriguing how Apple & Android do similar things, but concern is only stirred for Microsoft. The entire industry is moving toward user-authentication (to deal with software piracy) and offering cloud services. Not wanting to be part of that is fine, but it will certainly make interacting online a challenge... as well as a security risk.

I've upgraded all 3 of my computers to Windows 10... the old beater, my run-around-with notebook, and my at-home notebook. Each was a surprisingly easy upgrade and haven't had a lick of trouble. Heck, even my Dell Backup & Recovery software automatically detected the OS change and upgraded itself just fine.

As I related in another thread, I had 12+ hours of trouble installing W10 -- but last night I noticed that somehow the installation triggered the appearance of "beats audio" on my P/C. Now, any audio on my machine is screwed up. Well, I will try to deal with that this weekend....

My sister had that problem with her HP. It took a few seconds to fix... once we realized what it was needed.

Windows 10 upgrades "beats audio" abilities; the system values are increased for nicer sound. Unfortunately the settings have to set manually. Change the bit-rate from 16 to 24 and the Hz frequency from 48000 to 96000.

One thing: ANY wholesale update, of any system, results in days, weeks of picking up the pieces. My iphone for example, a couple times it's lost the ability to "imessage" with other iphones. I've had to resort to a general reset of the phone a couple of times now, and afterwards spend days, rediscovering all the junk that needs fixing, turning off.

Thanks for the advice, once I tracked down the settings, I made the change and now everything works!
