It's just the luck of the draw. I had 30% front and 20% rear for a fix it ticket. Pulled the tint off and put on 20% all the way around. Never got a ticket. Knock on wood. I've learned to train my self to constantly look in my rear view ahead of me in case I see a cop and I roll down the windows.

Well, if this particular cop was on his regular patrol and now knows where you live...he may target you for an easy ticket, especially come quota time.

You live in California so if you have any tint on the front side windows, it's not legal because the front side windows are already factory tinted 75% in the glass. In California the front side windows must allow more than 70% of light in. Unfortunately, no film on the market would be legal, not even the clear Crystalline 90 (90% x .75 resulting in an aggregate of 67.5%, below California's legal limit of 70%).

On the last sentence, that what my co-worker (retired cop) say the samething too......don't try to too noticeable or try roll-down all quickly avoid detection when you spot 5-0 front or back of you.

I feel your pain. I was pulled over in the HOV lane in NY just for tints, posted my feeling about it and got jumped on by all the self rightous, Pri-ophiles. It is rediculous to get stopped and ticketed for tints as a primary offense. You have no friends on this site when you are "on the wrong side of the law" Its a revenue earner for the county or town and the cops dont care about anything except that. Here in NY, you are a target in the HOV lane. They patrol voraciously and have to write tickets. So if it is a slow day for violators, look out. That being the case, I removed my tints. It wasnt worth the hassle every day. I was spotted and followed last month again for 2 miles, but Im clean now. Good luck

Did you have tints on the front sides too? I'm thinking about getting the rears tinted, nothing too dark, but enough to reduce the sun in my toddler's eyes... If I left the fronts untinted and just did the rears, that would technically violate NY tint laws (70% for front and rear), but do you think I would be bothered at all? (I travel the LIE HOV lane from the Queens border to Exit 53 and back for my everyday commute.)

Haha thanks, its very humorous to me! Glad to see there is some down to earth people on here, I was getting worried! I agree though getting pulled over for tint is very frustrating. Pretty rare here but I guess I beat the odds that day.

Definitely! I have the same habits, but the tint was so new I was worried about ruining them if I rolled them down. I wonder what the ticket is if you get caught again :X

Ragz's car is extensively modified with body kit, vinyl overlays and Valenti lights so it attracts more attention, but you won't be safe either because NY is even more restrictive with no tint on the rear side windows (compared to any darkness that can be used there in California). If you just want to reduce the sun in your toddler's eyes, a pull down shade (purchased at babies r us, etc.) can easily do the trick.

No tint in rear windows can't even imagine. NYC is insane.

I got I think 25 on the sides and 35 in the rear, I also paid a bit extra to get insurance for tickets and damages if they arise, so free replacement. if you were to look from the inside out, there is hardly a difference between the windshield and the rest of the windows. From the outside they appear really dark, it has to do with the material I had used. Never been pulled over for tint.

Actually, I understand your point of view, but I'd spend a little more time in a patrol car (in the front seat) before I pretended to know how LEO thinks about being forced to pull over juveniles "for tint."
Perhaps your community does the ride-along thing. It's a great opportunity to learn about life on the other side of the badge, and lets face it......if your car is pimped out then you know what?
    You're going to pulled over.
    It's easy math, folks.
LEO doesn't pick on old farts in bone stock cars because we usually have all of our paperwork in order, and statistically most of us have outgrown the "rebel without a clue" thing.
Old farts that haven't grown up yet usually drive illegally modified cars.

Contrary to popular belief, most LEOs don't have a quota however (comma!) they do have to do paper. LEO usually HATES to do traffic, and if you give them attitude?
You're going to get hammered, and I'm going to get left alone. :)

Caly is broke as the Ten Commandments.
My experience is that they're going to turn folks like you into a revenue source, and you're going to grow up someday and the next generation of LEOs will be picking on your kids instead of you.
We're not talking about Rosa Louise McCauley Parks and a bus seat.
Your civil rights aren't being trammeled, and if you wanna keep paying?
    Well that's up to you.

    Life goes on.
A couple of decades from now, this isn't going to seem as big a deal to you, I promise!

That may be, but there are plenty of old farts who drive illegally modified cars; however, they are happy to pay to play and don't come here whining as if they're the victims and give bad attitude to members here.

    True enough.
There are also illegal mods such as license plates turned sideways on M/Cs.
LEO usually doesn't pick on these much unless they pull over a jerk who gives them attitude, then?
    Icing on the cake... :)
The difference between an illegal plate that's rotated 90-degrees and stupid-dark tint is that LEO usually doesn't have to worry about getting shot by somebody hiding a weapon behind an illegal plate---even the morons that put covers over their license plates to try and fool light cameras aren't particularly dangerous.
(spoiler alert: those covers don't work! ;) ) You also can't drink an adult beverage or indulge in recreational pharmaceuticals when your car has a rotated plate.....or the baffles yanked out of their pipes.

Those are just some of the reasons why LEO might "hassle" illegal tinters....but I can loop you in on how to spoil their fun!!!

    Yup.
    You guessed it!
