There is no question that I will never buy another "traditional" car. I might buy a different hybrid one day if the Prius gets too expensive for me (purchase price) but I see no reason to go backward. I own my second Prius for all the positive reasons mentioned above and I don't care how low gas prices go for me it's hybrids until fuel cells are ready.

yes i will be happy with my prius if gas gets cheap. the oil companies will always be playing with gas prices and they will never be cheap. the politicians and the oil people will always see to that. so no matter what people should not be fooled to thinking that gas is going to go down and stay there. the only way an average person will gain a little is if a person gets a prius or similar mode of transportation. pete

    LOL

If you think that gas will become cheap then I have a bridge to sell ya!

Seriously the price of crude will only fall until the next hurricane, geo-political crisis or cold snap in the north east. I give it 3-6mons and the price will be up at $80 per barrel.

    Right, I was thinking December.
The price around here is $2.71. I don't think that is cheap. Americans have such short memories. A couple of months of over $3 a gallon and all of a sudden we think we are getting a bargain with anything less than that. In fact, that was the topic of conversation at lunch today.
We have had some heavy rains around this area for the last few days, and I have been driving my Explorer to work because the route I take to work tends to flood out. I do like that extra road clearance. But while driving, I keep thinking about the difference in mpg. 18 vs 54.
I love Lola and would love her even if gas was $.50 a gallon.

I would absolutely still be happy with my Prius. I thought this car was so well designed, I would've even considered it if it had had a conventional gas engine (as opposed to waitlisted with the hybrid engines).

I don't mind spending $25 instead of $32 to go 450 miles, so I still like cheaper gas.

It's also nice going an extra week between fillups, no matter the price.

And gas prices haven't really dropped that much, anyway! Prices have only rolled back to April, not to 1990. They're still higher than they ever were prior to last August. And you just know that a butterfly flitting its wings in Saudi Arabia will be enough to push it back up a quarter...

    Triphop, that's an outstanding graph.

Glad you like it. Its way out of date, btw. The explosive growth of oil consumption in China & India (not to mention the incredible growth in oil exporting countries) means that we are approaching the squeeze point between the supply/demand curves. And, yeah, sure that nice new oil find out in the GOM might look good on paper but its 27000ft below the surface of the waves (expensive to get) and its only going to possibly come online in around 2010. By that time the depletion rates of the rest of GOM, Alaska, etc, etc will make it not an increment to existing supplies - more likely just a replacement to depleted wells.

Probably not possible - we're just lucky that his 2 wrecks were deemed the other driver's fault and didn't raise our insurance. Mine's 19 now, maybe next year when he's not a teenager any more things will get better, but somehow I doubt it.

Guess you got first dibs on Seaside - maybe we can work a two for one deal with his parents and he can split his time between the 2 coasts. :D

I am happy when gas is "cheaper" as it is hard for the little guy and businesses when it goes so high. But like others here I bought my Prius for a lot more reasons than the price of gas!

close to 12NOK pr liter now,,,, same as if You in the US had to pay ca 7dollars pr gallon......

but if the gas got cheap here ,, id still buy it , i like the hightech car itself ,and the low consumtion is a bonus...

Will I still be happy with the Prius if gas gets cheap?

In the words of Tom Robbins, "Yes, oh yes, oh sweet yes".

According to John (I hope he'll forgive me, but I have no idea what his real name is), the Prius prioritizes clean emissions over saving gas, so I'm making less of a dead carbon footprint. And even at 1¢ per gallon, it's using less gas than almost any other vehicle on the road (it even uses less gas than my last motorcycle), so I'm contributing to making us less dependent for oil on foreigners who hate us. And the Prius's technology is representative of a direction in which I WISH US automakers were going, so I'm putting my money into a cause in which I believe - and I get a car out of the bargain!

Now, I paid list price (low $20k's) for a car with a small exterior, but midsize interior. with six-cd changer, remote entry, rear camera, and a host of other bells & whistles. It seems to me that's not unreasonable, even leaving out the high mileage.

One more thing: I'll never need a bumper sticker. My views on the environment are apparent to anybody who knows anything about the US auto market.

Of course. Why would we want to have an inferior car?

I originally bought my Prius because I was tired of paying to drive my Explorer 80+ miles a day, and the Explorer was closing in on 250,000 miles.
But after having the Prius for only 2 months. I Love it. I don't think I'd go back to a traditional vehicle, well I do have a '67 Mustang but that's doesn't count. The technology in this car is great, and is going to get even better. My wife has a Chevy Venture mini-van and is hoping by the time she's due for a new car they'll have something like the Toyota hybrid mini-vans they have in Japan.

I bought the Prius because it's a very good car, with plenty of space, quiet operation, comfortable ride and good handling, and because it gets excellent fuel economy and is environmentally sensible. I'd buy it again if fuel rolled back to 1969 pricing (22 cents per gallon of regular!), and reap those same benefits.

Just because fuel might become temporarily less expensive doesn't pose a moral imperative to waste it or pollute the world with toxic waste products unnecessarily.

It wasn't a matter of money for me either. It was about reducing gasoline consumption. I save just as much gas if it becomes cheap. That is, as long as I'm not tempted to drive more, and the Prius is fun to drive. :p

I see all the other features as a bonus.

Gas is not cheap. Never has been, and never will be. The price at the pump fluctuates, but bears no relation to what gas really costs.
