Oh hey, big improvement for the 2019 RAV4 hybrid, and it did seem like the 2018 was not pulling it's weight, barely ahead of the Highlander:

The way the Tundra has grown, I would settle for a Hybrid Tacoma. The current Tacoma is about the same size as my 2000 Tundra.

Isn't the Highlander a similar size to the Tacoma? That could give Toyota a Hybrid pickup truck.

No transit lanes here. There aren't even any multi-occupancy lanes which seem to be increasing in number over in the UK.

The rear Corolla seats lay flat too, I'm not sure how that differs to the Prius in that respect. Putting the seats down isn't something I can really consider though, as the contraption we use to allow three child seats is virtually a permanent addition. It can be removed but it's not easy and isn't something we'd consider just to lug a bicycle around inside the rear of the car (which seems to be the example given by all the reviews I've read...).

I mention practical from a purely selfish standpoint. We're ditching our 3-seater stroller but are keeping the 2-seater and single seater ones we use, and the 2-seater one is about 1.2m in length even when collapsed. The wider opening of the Corolla boot makes getting this in easy. The Prius boot in less than 1m in width (at least according to the specs) and the opening smaller still, naturally. The stroller may still fit in the Prius boot (without lowering the seats) but only diagonally and even then not easily. I doubt it would be possible to put both strollers in the Prius. Before switching our 2016 Prius for the Hiliux, we had different strollers that collapsed far more and were easily stowed in the Prius' boot, so my opinion is solely about our situation as it is right now.

The attached image explains why keeping the Prius wasn't really an option after we committed to using a 3-seater pram... the rear seats are down and the stroller only just fit!

Houston, we have a problem. Seems we can either take the babies or the pram, but not both. Pram it is, then!

He's not talking about the USA COROLLA - but the EU Corolla WAGON. Which I don't believe made it to the US - or AU either.

A wagon is heaps better than any sedan in the seat folding realm. I loved my wagons.

For whatever reason (sheeple steeped in years of SUV marketing blather, perhaps...), "wagon" is a dirty word in the US. So wrong. No, we haven't anything like a Corolla wagon here in decades -- and IIRC, those were "tall wagons," sort of like the first creeping steps in the later, full-on SUV invasion. . .

Last Corolla Wagon here was about 2003:
    upload_2019-2-27_10-48-18.png

Was a great car, they sold heaps - then suddenly stopped - they'd already dropped the Camry Wagon. There was a real dearth of smaller wagons after that - Peugeot 307 and Hyundai i30 wagons were the only ones for a while. GOLF wagon came a few years ago but restricted sales by not offering a Manual (only a clunky twin-clutch). Ford has just released the Focus wagon here - again only as an Auto petrol, no hybrid.

I thought the Matrix replaced the Corolla wagon until it was discontinued.

How does opting for the 2.0 litre hybrid result in a reduction in boot space over the 1.8 litre? It should be identical. Did they stuff a larger battery in the boot? (Although I thought it was placed under the rear seats so the cargo area shouldn't be affected).

Yes, exactly that, a bigger battery.

Does that mean the Prius c forum here will morph into the Corolla Hybrid forum much like the PiP & Prime merged?

No since they’re separate models. Yes the Prime is a separate model now (as Toyota wants to market it) but it is based on the Prius. The Corolla is nothing like the Prius c

I always thought the Prius-c was a bit of a head scratcher. And now, the reasoning seems to twist some more. In particular, they're eliminating the "small" Prius and replacing it with the Corolla hybrid -- which has 3.5 cubic feet more passenger volume than does the current "main line" Prius?!? Of course, the Prius's under-hatch cargo space is far more than the Corolla's trunk. Maybe it's wrong to look at the Corolla as a "replacement" for the Prius-c.

It's just very hard to discern what "they're thinking" when changes like this happen.

Oh yes, it also appears that they did manage to stuff the battery and all its hardware under the back seat, trunk volume is unchanged from the regular car!

The only thing that qualifies it as a replacement for the Prius c is the fact that it's the lowest cost Toyota hybrid. It's a different body style, it'll drive much better, it has a larger cabin and a larger boot. It's also better equipped (The Prius c One was quite spartan - full folding seat back, non-adjustable front seat headrests, non-height-adjustable front seatbelts, no cargo light, no glovebox light etc). At least the Corolla Hybrid comes in LE trim.

I suspect Toyota will eventually introduce more trim levels but for now, they want to test the market, avoid overlapping with the Prius and also market the low starting price.
