I think I did the same thing that the OP wife did just the weekend before last. I backed the car out of the garage so I could get all my yard tools out to do yard work. I thought I turned it off, but apparently I didn't. Because when I went to put the car back in the garage (probably ~ 4 hrs later) the lights on the dash were lit with the red triangle, and this awful high pithced whiney alarm. "Uh-oh" I thought  - this isn't good. Bad thoughts were running through my head that I might have drained the traction battery. But I quickly figured I couldn't have done that because the ICE would have started. I then figured that I must have somehow drained the 12V battery. I tried cycling the power button ON a couple of times. On the 3rd try it came back to life. I let the ICE run a few minutes and then shut it down. The traction battery had not been drained at all during the whole ordeal. So, I concluded that I must have left it in a mode where it drained the 12V battery. I'm not sure if it was the "IG-ON" mode, or just the accessory mode. But it didn't start the ICE (FOB was in the car the whole time). No big deal. But not good for the 12V battery.

It would be nice to understand what mode that was though. I think it was the "IG-ON" mode. I'm under the impression that the ICE won't start unless you are actually in the "READY" mode. Yes?

That is correct. I had never experienced the IG-ON mode and other than a color change on the power button there is no indication. Being color blind I never noticed that.

I doubt that she would ever want to find a stranger waiting for her in the back seat.

Just lock the damn thing. It prevents more than one unpleasant possibility.
