Why should I pick the Gen 4 over a Chevy Volt?

    Back when the Pipa and the first Volts came out, they were 40 large, and car prices averaged a few thou lower than they do now.
    Let me check......
    OK...the Googles say that new car prices in the US are 33.5....or more than the base Volt.
    People are already making higher car payments than my house payment used to be.
    If you're smart enough to factor the federal kickback into the pricing, then you're probably smart enough to refi when the tax money comes in.
    If you can't afford the higher initial payments, then you should be buyng used cars.

    I'm curious as to the difference between the equipment between a base Volt and a base Prime, but we're going to have to wait until they're both available enough to have about the same MSRP minus pricing as the Volt does now.
    Remember:
    Base to base they're pretty close to the same price after the federal kickbacks.
    The Volt's EV range is roughly double that of the Prime (53/25?)
    The Prime's Gas efficiency is roughly 25-percent more than the Volts (42/53?)

    So.....
    As always when you weed-dive that much you enter the magical world of the fanboyz because I know of V1 drivers who almost never run their ICE, -or- their battery and I know of Pipa drivers who almost never charge their batteries - and a few probably buy very little fuel since they (like me) live close enough to work not to have to spool up the ICE.....even with a 9 mile range.

    I see first gen Volt AND Pip drivers crying about their vehicles only being worth 12-16K....so remember.
    The fed giveth and the market taketh away.

    People like me who watch early adopters stand in loooooooooong lines for the newest I-thingy giggle and put a $200 Droid in their pocket and reap the benefits of competition in the marketplace.

    Toyota reliability, rear seat room in the Prius is superior, and long term fuel mileage. I have just over 6000 miles on my Prius 2, and have averaged 57.8 mpgs over the last 3 month period. That's insane! The Volt is built as a complete after thought by Chevrolet. They can't get it right.

    According to the factual results, the Volt can get over 100 miles per gallon. It just depends on how much EV a person uses. They both have their pros and cons.

    that's incorrect. mag is talking about actual hv mpg, you are talking about mixed hv/ev.

    I actually think that from a drivetrain perspective Chevy got it right with the Volt. I could do a very large amount of my driving in pure EV with the Volt and I believe the total amount of gasoline I've burned would be considerably less. Now with the low fuel prices it doesn't make a lot of sense due to the price premium of a Volt over a Prius but if my concern was to use as little gasoline as possible the Volt would be a great choice for me.

    Ever drive a volt through an s curve? Very scary!

    Volt truly can't tow. Max speed it only 100. It handles like crap. It's cramped. No hatchback. No car camping. It's American crap. What else do u need to know

    1. I have a truck for towing.
    2. I have no need for going over 100. Why would anybody?
    3. I think it handles nicely.
    4. It has a hatchback.
    5. Why camp in a car? I have a truck for that.
    6. I own Chevy's and Toyota's.

    Yes and I thought it handled better than my Gen 4 Prius, but playing sporty driver is not why I bought a Prius or considered a Volt

    I went 65mph on a curved 25mph off ramp, it did activate traction control but no issue otherwise.

    If your volt didn't handle right a small $5 part inside the radio for monitoring g's is miscallibrated

    Oh I think he got about half right......

    Volt can't tow.... Well I'm sure it could pull something if you really wanted to but I couldn't find a rating so close enough (btw, neither can the Prius)
    Max speed is 100.... checks out on edmunds, Prius is 115, does it really matter?
    Handles like crap.... "crap" is pretty subjective but 0.84g in a 300 ft skid pad isn't great, but it's not crap either (that would be the 2016 Prius at 0.79g)
    It's cramped.... yes, in the back seats it certainly is
    No hatchback.... it is a hatchback
    No car camping.... As in sleeping in the car? people who aren't homeless do this? if you're referring to putting a tent in the car then driving it someplace and setting up the tent, certainly possible. If it is doing your homeless impression, then probably not, I couldn't sleep in the Prius either
    it's American crap... I'll assume this is your reliability rating. According to TrueDelta the Volt does require more trips to the dealer than the Prius, but when you drill into the data the Prius is going in for engine repairs while the Volt is going in for body and trim repairs. You shouldn't have trim issues in a modern car, but I do think engine issues are a bigger concern. Either way, both cars are rated good by TrueDelta.


    I'll give you a 3 out of 7, but because I'm generous I'd be willing to throw out the "no car camping" because I don't know exactly what you mean and give you a 3 out of 6.

    Around here it typically means sleeping in it overnight, whether it be at a campsite, rest stop or parking lot and with the car "on" for HVAC comfort. It can be either with the front seats reclined or in the back hatch area with the rear seats folded down using bedding or even an air mattress. The latter setup is what I think he is referring to.
