The other night I was in eco+ev and with heater set to high and DEF the ICE wouldn't turn on. Last night though, the ICE was coming on in the same situation? The only difference is that I was 10 minutes into my trip the first time, and only a minute or so in the 2nd time.
Sooooo... yes it's cold here, but I can't figure out why the ICE kicks on when it does - it's not consistent. No heat, fan, etc. on, and sometimes it comes on immediately, sometimes 2 or 5 minutes into the drive - and stays on! No matter how slow I go, I can't make the same trips I could make staying in EV the whole time. I understand ICE may kick on under 32, but is there any way to minimize that besides a fresh charge, no acceleration and no heat etc.? My reported mileage for the same type of driving is dramatically poorer (like from an average of 84 to 62) and I can never get one of those short 999 mpg trips in. Could something else be wrong?
To answer your question no, no way to minimize that apart from a fresh charge. That's the biggest thing. I also suspect that driving too slowly might be counterproductive in terms of keeping the battery temps sufficiently high.
Thanks - it's really frustrating. I was in an accident, and I keep wondering if the crash messed up something computer-wise, or if it's all due to the cold. Hoping when I take it in for its 10,000 check-up they can run a diagnostic to make sure all's well!
we're talking about getting the charge to finish just before you leave. since the temperature is higher during charging, this would negate the effects of exterior temperatures lowering the temp of the hybrid system (which is one of the reasons that the ICE can start).
so the point is that if you come home at 9 pm and charge immediately and overnight the lows drop to 25, the ICE will kick in if you drive off in the morning. OTOH, if you set the charge timer to finish charging ~20 minutes before you leave the house in the morning, ICE probably won't come on. he's trying to avoid ICE startage, so that's why you wouldn't do a fresh start anytime you can…
okay, now i'm completely confused. you don't want the ice to start? a fresh charge warms the battery and keeps it from starting? but, you wouldn't do a fresh charge?
BTW I charged my PIP last night, finished charging at 6:00 pm. this morning, went out to car, put in ready mode, (didn't need to go any where) Inputted my battery amp data into Xgauge, finished that, turned car off, ICE never came on and it is 28 degrees outside.
Only way to keep engine off is no heat, fan , defrost, no auto settings. today I went 15.3 miles all electric, 23 degrees, was a little cool in car, but can be done. Engine will start below 14 degrees no matter what you do.
15 miles in all ev is sweet! was it flat and slow? i'm down to 13 from 16 miles in summer. avg speed 28mph and a little hilly.
Lol he was doing a fresh charge. Was wondering if there was anything else he could do to prevent ICE from starting. My presponse was no. PK, just turning it on isn't enough. You gotta wait like 60 seconds or something.
Just saw your other post, looks like it hasn't been dropping that far below freezing for you yet. We'll wait
And it took longer than 60 secons to input all of those numbers, characters, symbols into my Scangauge lol LG-MS910 ? 2
OK - I think there's something wrong with mine. It's not that cold yet, and I can't go 30 feet (no heat, air, seats, anything on) without the ICE kicking in... Used to be able to!!!!!
