Why do people hate the Prius?

The GREET model says you and grandpa are wrong since the greatest expenditure of energy is accomplished during the use of the vehicle, not the creation of It.

I find it amusing you focus on carbon dioxide with no mention of all of the other harmful emissions released during combustion of gasoline. This is very typical of people who know jack about the environment and base their views on a politically driven ideology. It's really too bad people are not taught this stuff long before politics have brainwashed them .

 

I don't remember specifics but was surprised about how much of a vehicle is (or at least can be) recycled these days, so throwing away a junker to use a new fuel efficient one may not be as bad a decision as one might initially think.

 

I get such a kick out people people who believe that by buying a Prius, they're taking a small step forward in saving the planet. I see so many Prius's with the Obama/Biden 2008 bumper sticker and the "War is not the Answer" sticker LOL!

I wanted to change it up by sticking my Iraq Campaign Veteran decal on mine...just to man it up a bit. Your license plate is the best I've seen though :rockon:

 

That is so unfortunate but I could have guessed your prior occupation with your first few posts. I find it somewhat disturbing that my taxes go towards paying for the development of poor attitudes, egos, and anti-community ideologies. It'll take more than a bumper sticker to raise you to the status of Man IMO. A real man takes care of everyone, not just himself.

 

I'm sorry to disappoint you. I'm proud of my service to my nation and I am NOT a war criminal. I believe firmly in the bill of rights to include the 2nd amendment. I don't believe in taking money from hard working people and giving it to freeloaders. I believe that the best way to take care of people is teaching them to take care of themselves and allowing them to do it. THAT is what America is about. I'm sorry you don't like it

 

What is the GREET model? As for other harmful emissions released during combustion of gasoline, I'm sure mine are different, as I don't drive a gas powered vehicle. The funny part, is I was just talking today with my uncle who's a scientist (geologist) about "global warming" and he's very skeptical about the whole phenomenon.

 

Thanks. Any car with the Obama/Biden sticker, and I keep amazing myself how many purely ignorant people are out there. Especially the ones who think he's really helping this country. So to reiterate, when I bought the Prius, saving the planet was NOT on my list of considerations, hence one of the motivations for my plates (which are getting transferred to the TDI).

 

But a liberal takes care of everyone before themselves, and at their and everyone else's expense. Sorry, but I look out for me first.

I don't know if I find it to be 'amusing', but that's how the "War On Carbon" is being waged here in America. They don't call it an NOx tax, it a Carbon Tax. They don't scream about our particulate matter footprint.
Everybodys views are based on "politically driven ideology". The real difference between activists and religious zealots is that occasionally---juuust occasionally, an activist with integrity will be willing to test their beliefs by seeking out differing points of view, instead of trying to stifle original thought through hatred, censorship, shouting, etc. I always know that I'm on the intellectual or moral high ground in a debate when the person with whom I'm having a disagreement with has to resort to shouting or insults....especially personal insults. That's when you know you're scoring for real points!

As far as the military dimension of the Prius hate saga...I'll just say that there are hundreds of thousands of Prius owners. We're not all bed-wetting, tree hugging, latte swilling liberals.
There are millions of military members and vets out there. We're not all jack-booted, beer-swilling, gun worshiping dullards. Heck...sometimes Toyota actually allows military members to be Prius owners!!!

Bumper stickers are cool. And I've had more than my fair share of fun with them---but it's fun. Not religion.

People hate Prius owners for the same reason that they hate soccer fans, Mac weenies, and Volvo (and to a lesser extent, Subaru) drivers. It's not Soccer, Macintosh, and overly expensive cars that they hate---but the elitist attitudes of their owners...

Your first mistake here was assuming I do not believe the same things. Be careful what you assume. The only sticker on my car is a small Farm Bureau Member sticker.

There is nothing I disagree with in the above diatribe. I will state that for the record it was the newbies that came charginging in with their proclamnation of hate against the environment and the proud stance on self interest. I can't help but be annoyed with such attitudes as these are the same people I have to work against when preserving habitat and agricultural land. To much anti-environmental preaching by their political gurus Seems to cloud their minds because on one hand they fight environmental progress and on the other hand they want places to hunt, fish, and recreate.

As For the military aspect, I will not disrespect all of those who serve but I have been around military personnel all of my life and there are a great many who are in it to be billy badass and collect a paycheck. They build up a huge ego and presume they are better than civilians. Obviously this doesn't apply too everyone but you would be lying if you said this is not common.

I choose to serve my county in a different way by protecting lands before they are destroyed, restoring lands already destroyed and providing outdoor and environmental education for adults, students and all of the scouts I work with. I respect those who serve enough to volunteer with The Sportsmen's Legacy Foundation who's mission is to provide outdoor education and opportunities for children who's parents were lost or handicapped during public service.

I've been known to hug a tree and swig a white mocha but to assume someone is a hard left liberal because of those qualities will make an nice person of you in the end.

My encounters have been with ignorance and misunderstanding. No starter, ICE only runs when it is needed (not when it is not needed) so does not idle, does not have keys, good fuel efficiency, PZEV, quiet. This runs counter to conventional ICE vehicles. Has a starter, ICE runs continuously, requires smog checks, poor fuel efficiency, has keys.

This sets up a dichotomy and people immediately fall back on beliefs (acts of faith) vs. first hand evidence. We live in a world of hearsay (newspapers, radio, television, Internet) so the average person does not understand that science disproves things and we only accept what we cannot disprove, and keep on testing.

People have sincerely told me they have to leave their vehicle idling because they "don't want to wear out the starter". This reveals they have no concept of air quality, vehicle quality, community responsibility and actual realiability. When I advise them my vehicle has no starter, they are threatened.

Many places are beyond carrying capacity (310 million people in the US, 7 billion on earth) and we are now in Peak Everything - Era of Declines, based on cheap oil. People are defensive because they have been led to believe that wants can be unlimited. When you mention a limit it is perceived that you are artificially and arbitrarily limiting their choices.

 

ETC, I may have misinterpreted your stance initially. We're of a like mind, though I think our current economic position is more precarious than it was in the 90s (China today is a more hostile nation than post-WWII, re-industrialized Japan), especially when both China and Russia have bowed out of the dollar in terms of their own trading, and that the FED (along with the spend-crazy corrupt politicians of both political persuasions, more so on the left at the moment) needs to be reeled in.

I also puke in my mouth a little when seeing the Obama/Biden stickers still affixed to Priuses (or any car for that matter).

 

I was at Costco this afternoon and saw a Prius near the tire repair area. It had one temporary tire in working condition on a yellow colored wheel (not sure where either of these came from). The other 3 tires each had 3 nails somehow embedded into the sidewalls. These nails looked more like those nails that are used to nail wood onto a concrete floor and are shot out of a "gun" with a 22 calibur cartridge. The people at Costco didn't have much information other than it was some act of vandalism. After thinking about it, I have a feeling the vandals hit a bunch of cars, not just the Prius. But I feel sorry for the Prius owner. And whatever the facts, what kind of people are out there?

That's terrible. My mom's Prius tire recently had a nail found in the sidewall. Only one though. I never considered it might be vandalism, but could be (she has a pretty smug-sounding vanity plate).

Just a reminder to everyone: If you're every lucky enough to catch a vandal doing something to your Prius, you can always press the red button to activate the Panic Alarm. That'll emit an alarm that should scare the vandal away. Hopefully you never have to use it, but it's comforting to have.

 

Is it really a surprise? In recent times the US has made a real cluster of the wars it's gone off and fought. I don't find it surprising most families would prefer their kids are not part of these endeavors.
