The Gen3 series ( i.e. - Prius liftback and and Prius v ) have really tarnished Toyota's quality image. The quality issues have even pulled me towards looking at other brands ( notably, Honda's latest hybrid system ). Never thought I would say that...but Honda's system does look good...even though it is arguably a bit 'less efficient' than Toyota's HSD in some use cases.

Also, I have been looking at the used market lately and it isn't going to be pretty. There are a LOT of Gen3's out there that have a 'rebuilt' title, etc...due to the fact there is massive incentive to get these vehicles 'up and running' due to the ridiculous used car market. Almost all of them have a large number of miles on them as well. Lurking problems are going to show up sooner rather than later in these vehicles that would have otherwise stayed in the graveyard.

Are your dash lights on? It’s one issue I wouldn’t ignore unless your ok with not being able to stop.

Yea the lights came on. Breaks full mushy and less responsive now. I'm not driving it.

Looks like this is the part that needs to be replaced. https://www.ebay.com/itm/393898214613?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=k7aHIM3ITNi&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=q_rkz1u5tem&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Not bad. My friend is a mechanic and I'd pay him to put the part in.

Good to hear :) I ignored mine till one day going down a hill I couldn’t stop. What an adventure!

I had a mechanic do mine. Was $700 with a used one from a ‘11 Prius. At the time he said those had updated versions with no problems. Mine is a ‘10.

I see. I have a '10 as well. Yea the brake actuator item number in the '10 is different. 700 seems like a good price. Not bad.

Was this the part you brought in?

And the mechanic just put that in?

I got a quote from a shop. The person said I'm looking at 380 for labor. With me being in my own part.

I had this problem last summer on a road trip.
Everything seemed fine before I headed out. But 1500 miles down the road my brakes got spongy and the dash lights came on.

A buddy I was visiting had a scanner and that showed a bad actuator.
Opened up the hood checked brake fluid and noticed that it was way down for no apparent reason. Filled it backup to where it's supposed to be drove it a couple miles working then brakes and they came back. Topped it off again and everything's been working fine since.

The brake booster pump cycles about every 10-15 minutes when parked idling.
I check the fluid regularly but it's always full in the morning. If you watch the fluid
reservoir while the pump runs, the fluid level drops about a quarter of an inch. But once the pump stops it slowly fills back up.

I know that at some point the booster pump and actuator will need to be replaced. So last time I was at the yard I grabbed both.

To be honest I don't know what it looked like, plus it was 3 or so years ago. Your cost would be similar to mine. The mechanic did everything, researched replacement parts, found a used one and installed it. He even told me to call Toyota to see if they'd warranty it. Did you check for recall notices on your 2011?

The thing with that ebay listing is I didn't see mileage listed. That would make me nervous, though they can just make up a mileage number anyway.

So I fixed the issue for my car. I simply had to add more dot 3 brake fluid. The prius' computer turned off the abs and brake warning lights so it should be fixed.

So where did the brake fluid go? You might want to get the brakes inspected to see if the pads are worn thin or if there are any external fluid leaks.

That's pretty awesome if that was the cure! Did you have all those dash warning lights on?

Hi all, has anyone been able to fix this problem at an independent mechanic/shop around Atlanta, GA?
    Which one?
    Thanks!
