Not trying to sound rude here, but why is BSM needed? Is it too hard to look over you're shoulders?

Poor functional vehicle design. The high raking sides and other design elements make visibility almost as poor as a van.
One reason I bought my 2008 Corolla was due to the higher raking sides in the new design released in Japan and coming to the US.
This is probably more of an issue for shorter drivers.

When you are in your 70's yeah, it can be hard to look over your shoulders.

Was it extra for the blind spot package?

The newer "2017.5" Prius include that as part of the standard TSS Plus safety package recently added. This is in addition to the TSS-P safety features on all 2017. I purchased mine last October and it does not have BSM and it was not available as an option either.
Also new, I believe the trim two now has an optional bumper appearance package. Previously, there were no optional packages for trim two.

Does it also help for backing out of a right angle parking spot, ie, one like this:

In this situation looking over your shoulder doesn't really help, it's back out slowly and pray traffic in the parking lane has the sense and attention to stop.

Maybe not the new level "1", introduced I believe in conjunction with extra safety stuff added to "2"??

Not sure if the 2 has rear crossing traffic alert, but higher spec cars do. My advice for similar parking arrangements would be to reverse into the bay and be able to drive forward on exit. Of course, I realise this is not always feasible due to traffic congestion etc., but is an acknowledged road safety recommendation.

I find it physically impossible to back into a parking spot.

The newer "2017.5" has this, I believe as part of TSS-Plus. The earlier Trim Two, like mine, does not. I just have TSS-P. :(

Sorry I was away for a few weeks. To answer your question - the newer Prii come with the Blind Spot package as standard. It is not extra. Now the dealers may not have as much markdown on the newer 2017.5 stock as the older stock. Hope this answers your question.

I have a 2016 PriusC two, my only complaint is the radio. Everything else is just something to break in my opinion.
