Where are you from and where do you live now?

I agree. Also, many of our parents are or were more mobile than us. While the majority of people responding in this forum were actually born in the the U.S., I'm sure many of their parents were immigrants. My mother and her parents came from China and lived in England. My grandfather also worked in France, my grandmother in Singapore. My mother, who lived in Scotland for a while too, still makes fairly frequent trips to China. I came from UK in 1972, but have been living in this general area (Washington DC) ever since. I've traveled through most of the States, but haven't actually been as mobile as my own parents and grandparents.

Ok, here's some mobility to add to your calculations...

My mother, father and stepfather were all born in NY.

When mom & dad married, they moved to Southern California, where my older sister and I were born.

When I was 1, parents split up and EVERYONE moved back to NY (the Bronx)

When I was 8, mom remarried. Stepdad's mom was French Canadian, born near Ottawa, but in Quebec. It was 1968, The Bronx was a nasty place to be, and mom and stepdad didn't want to vote for Humphrey OR NIxon, so they moved us to Montreal, which they could do because of relatives in the vicinity.

1969, baby sis born in Montreal.

1978, parents move to Newport, RI

1979, I move to Boston for school.

1980, older sis officially moves to Manhattan

1980-81, Jr. year in London (10 months)

81-82 commuting between Newport RI and Boston to finish school.

82-83 back to London for about 8 months, but couldn't make it stick, so back to Newport...just in time for the last America's Cup races in that town!

83-86 Northern Virginia (Arlington/Alexandria)

86 Newport again

87-92 Boston again (this time parents moved to same city at the same time...but I didn't live with them), also Brookline

92-93 Larkspur, CA

93-current, Petaluma, CA

(and oh yeah...dh was born in NYC and lived there most of his life, but we met out here in CA)
(and parents and both sisters are now in LA, after various peregrinations of their own...in the case of the parental units...they have a flat in London and split their time between London & LA)

So, do 11 years in Canada and about 2 in England count for variety?

Live: San Diego, California. Not my choice, we moved here when I was three. We lived in San Jose for one year when I was 9-10, then returned to San Diego. I got a job here, so I've stayed.

I have visited quite a few places but only lived in two. And in San Diego I've only lived in five places. When my parents arrived we lived in a rented house, then they bought a home and I lived there. When I moved out I lived in an apartment, then a condo and now my house. That's it. Five places. Six if you count the apartment they lived in in Connecticut when I was born.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. Unless a person in North America is of aboriginal descent, their ancestors came from somewhere else, leaving their entire lives behind to start new ones. Subsequent generations seem to be staying put (to a greater degree, anyway).
