Yes, actually, I do. I have a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering and provide consulting to the petrochemical industry. PriusChat actually has a surprisingly large number of engineers, scientists, and techies. Including those who work directly in oil exploration

Does that bother you? I suppose in your frame of reference, anybody involved in oilfields, refineries, engineering - like me - should drive some Dodge truck Hecho en Mexico.

    Thanks perfesser.

No, that is NOT the point. The "point" is that the companies, eg EM, made VERY specific employment promises in exhange for the billions of Canadian taxpayer dollars and *very* lucrative tax incentives. Such as:

Misdirected spending: Groups demand investigation into billions in federal subsidies to Canada's booming oil and gas industry — Ecojustice Canada

Notice that under *extreme* negative publicity, some of these subsidies will be gradually reduced

Oil and Gas Subsidies Complaints — Ecojustice Canada

This historical data brings up the ugly truth of Canadian oil production: by law, Canada MUST supply the US with oil, even if it means deep losses funded entirely by the Canadian taxpayer

Maude Barlow, U.S tops up with Canadian Oil

NRDC Press Archive: New Report Finds U.S. Demand for Canadian Oil and Gas Is Destroying Canadian Environment

Now that Americans are demanding tar sands, guess who is paying to develop them?

The Catholic Register - Big Oil gets big subsidies

What you appear to have failed to grasp - I'll explain it again in very simple terms - is that the only way to get this exotically expensive oil to market in the US, is to set up Crown Corporations.

The sole purpose of these Crown Corporations, such as the one for Hibernia, is to shelter the companies like EM from any financial risk. Under original terms, to guarantee a per-barrel production cost of $30, there was a large requirement for Canadian engineers, Canadian construction, etc

Instead, with whining on the part of the oil companies, only the most generic labor was Canadian. Most engineering was done in Europe, the platforms were also foreign. So why the hell are Canadian taxpayers - such as myself - subsidizing YOUR oil needs??

If the oil was so easy and so cheap to get, companies like Chevron, EM, Shell, BP, etc would form partnerships and go it alone. But why do that if some sucker will more-or-less guarantee you profits, no matter what? Even going so far as to legally shelter you from anything that could possibly go wrong

Ah, it all makes sense now!

Whether using Canadian taxpayer dollars to secretly pump money into Crown Corporations to guarantee profits, or having lame royalty schedules

Alberta’s Oil Royalty Increase Is Protested - New York Times

there is no excuse whatsoever for Canadians to subsidize America's oil appetite. If Americans want the oil, let them pay for the exploration, development, production, and shipment costs.

Oh, do me a favor? Drop the "yall" thing. It wouldn't matter if you had a Ph.D. in ChemEng, folks automatically think you're a bit ... slow

Bringing up the Jeep, with the Mercedes V6 turbodiesel. It is officially rated by Transport Canada as 12 l/100km city, 9 l/100km highway. Converted to Miles per Imperial Gallon, that would be 24 city, 31 highway

Where the hell are folks getting this 40 mpg figure? Out of their butt??

Oh, so you'd support sending a guy off to the Mid East to die, just to support massive fuel consumption

I am SO glad I was able to walk away from the Army when I did. This has nothing to do with keeping the world a safe place, it has to do with keeping the oil flowing out of the mideast.

The EPA numbers are based on the same testing for both large and small vehicles.
For 2008 model years their are a few stops and quick accelerations made during the tests as well as high speeds (80mpg).
All vehicles will do better at 55 than 80. Trucks probably do even better comparitively due to their high drag coefficients.

Since that was the only specific question you asked, that is the only one I answered here. I have responded to other questions you had. If you have any unanswered questions about the Prius, please repost it or link to it and I will be happy to help however I can.

About 5-10 mpg depending on wind, elevation, terrain, etc. Still better than the Dodge in the next lane

Jee-zus. This is getting sad. You did NOT provide any "facts." You provided links to Consumer Affairs, a well-known ambulance chasing lawyer site. Ok, here are some "facts" about Dodge trucks, from the same site

Consumer complaints about Dodge Truck Engine Noise

Your "facts" only made a fool out of you. Keep in mind a disproportionately large number of engineers, scientists, and techies are Prius drivers. Good luck debating with an engineer, it's obvious you can't

Just curious if you have ripped the DPF's off your diesel Dodge trucks, and put in a custom tune, so when the light turns green you get a huge cloud of black smoke.

So why not move to a country where you won't have to put up with all that nasty stuff? You know, like Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, etc. I understand a gay person is killed in Iran, severely punished in the other countries, so you'd fit right in

I'm strictly a "live and let live" guy. As long as you don't s*** on me, I leave you alone. When I still lived in a high rise condo, the best neighbors I ever had were a gay couple down the hall. Very considerate, always nice to me, etc. Never felt threatened by the one eyed snake either

I was against the gay marriage thing here in Canada when it went through. But guess what? Nothing really happened. Life goes on as usual

Even this whole thing of Don't Ask Don't Tell. When I was in the Army, all of us knew a couple of guys were gay. So what? I also knew they'd give their lives, same as we would have. Openly gay people can serve in various EU militias, such as the UK and Sweden, with no problem whatsoever

    Grow up

So why are you still here? Again, good luck trying to convince the engineers, scientists, and other educated folks about your line of reasoning

I can afford pretty much whatever vehicle I want, it's a writeoff to me anyway. I could march into a Range Rover dealer tomorrow and cut a cheque on a brand new HSE or Supercharged Westminister, no problem.

I drive a Prius - warts and all - because I like to. Every car has negatives, including the Prius. Deal with it

Isn't it apparent that Mattpopp is just putting everyone on ? He is a split personality. Suddenly, logical, factual and literate (on the surface) and then toward the end comes the y'all Texas mode. I think he's having fun, and Y'all fell for it!

Would you like to see what a typical trolls first post on Prius Chat might look like?
First they ask a question without searching for an answer, there are so many answers to this question on PC I haven't read any new information on this thread, none what so ever. It is all covered elsewhere.
Second, because you believe big is better you try to belittle the Prius by describing it as "this little thing" or not even a car in your opinion and calling it little like it's too small to consider even though in reality it's on the smaller end of the mid-size vehicle class.
By the way, if big is better does that mean you would rather wake up next to Rosanne Barr than Kylie Minogue? Not this little black duck.
Third, in a smoke and mirrors exercises you try to make us think you give 2 hoots about the environment asking about battery disposal. Environmentalists don't think of disposal, they think of opportunities for recycling.

Your first question, if you were not a troll may have read more like this.
Maybe if your first post was a little about yourself in the new members section you might also have had more cred.

Then you come out with gems like this
How do you know the environmental stance of the OP in this thread? He might have bought the Prius to save on gas but still wants to personalise his ride. It wouldn't be the first time a Prius was modified for performance. Who said he wasn't considering a free flowing exhaust? What you said is like saying a guy who drives a toy truck must drive 10+mph over the speed limit because he must "live with that label".

Even when someone wants to race in auto-cross you have to put them down and in your post pretend to know about the HSD but show your ignorance. http://priuschat.com/forums/prius-modifications/34553-racing-prius-4.html#post662046

In reality you didn't come to PC to find anything out or to ask a question but to cause aggravation and repeat the same dribble all the other knobs repeat. On top of that you come asking questions pretending you want to learn about Prius then purport to be an expert on how the hybrid system works, sad isn't it?
    Your being a troll didn't escape detection for long, I refer you to post 12 in this thread;
All this because the OP has an issue with a car so tough it took a straw chewin' bacca spittin' yokel on top gear half a dozen weapons ending with a gun that would stop a tank to disable it, yet on American cop shows 1 well placed bullet in a yank tank and boom.
This is my last post in this thread, I have better things to do with my time.

Well, not that this thread hasn't been tons of fun, but how about one of you Moderators moving it to FHOP? It's obvious this has nothing to do with any Technical discussion, and also very obvious we'll never see the Pretend Cowboy Texans ever again

If we have to suffer through reading it, everyone gets to read through it. :D

As long as no one posts to it again - like I am now ;) - it will die off and become nothing more than a repressed memory.

This is like Jeopardy. Heres a answer and we will make up the Question and the Motive. One fellow in here that did not fall to yalls level. Dont remember his name but Started with Z. Good guy

To touch on the Comment the one fellow made. All I was stating there was I was against Gay marriage like yourself. Unlike how you may feel about the subject, I never said I wanted to have a Gay killed. What good would come from that. I have to say that that very was uncalled for, as I am sure there are a few Gays that use this site. And they are much better people then you are.

Yall should be ashamed of your self. I came here with a honest question. I felt I got attacked so I responded. And one then lead to another. Yall think you each have the answer. Troll this, Troll that, hes here because he is from texas and all of this other bull. Whatever, I see what type of people drive a Prius and I see why us that drive large trucks get the dirty looks. I was never going to sell the trucks, just thought about a grocery getter, stuff like that. Well screw that I dont want to be stereotyped as one of yall.

The jeep cheriokee with a diesel, personal expericence while i had my truck in the shop, and yes it was Hand Cal.

Heres a little video for your car.

Well I asked what the environmental effects where. Well sounds like the production of the Prius battery is destroying the environment in Sudbury, Ontario.

    <YAWN>

I was initially against gay marriage as I didn't understand it. A lot of homophobes were making outrageous claims, like gays would be getting government money. All bulls*** of course.

But loud, whiny, provocative groups *always* get the media spotlight. Hence the kooky religious homophobes were going on and on about the end of the world due to gay marriage. They even brought up beastiality, what the f*** does THAT have to do with the issue?!?

Are you personally affected by gay marriage? I'm not, and quite frankly I could give one rat's a** if a man and a woman, two woman, two men, get married. Once married, EVERYBODY has the equal right to be miserable! Just kidding, all you married folks, I'm sure it's roses

Personally, if it was up to me, I'd put all the homophobes, white supremists, religious kooks, on a small island somewhere and let them figure out cannibalism. It would solve a lot of problems in the US and Canada

No, you did NOT come here with an honest question. You immediately started off with bulls*** like "little car" and it only got worse. Any fool with half a brain - even one who pretends to be a cowboy by wearing the boots, hat, and skintight Wrangler jeans - could have gone directly to Toyota to determine if battery failure was an issue

Considering how long the NiMH battery warranty is (8-10 years, up to 150,000 miles, depending on whether you are Federal or CARB emissions), do you really think battery replacement is an issue? How about the Prius taxi's with +400,000 km on them, by then a Crown Vic has gone through 2-3 transmissions

You really made a fool of yourself - and indirectly of all Texans - by purporting as Fact, the ambulance chasing lawyer website. I was easily able to find nasty things about Ford, Dodge, etc.

Ok, you tell us, what is "the answer?" I'm just a dumb consulting engineer, use very simple words.

Hey, let's drill for coastal oil in Canada, thanks to NAFTA and the dumb Canuck taxpayer, the costs are capped at $30 a barrel. That oil could cost $120 a barrel to extract, but we can hide behind the skirts of a Crown Corporation and screw every Canadian taxpayer

Oh, let's mine all that tar sand in Alberta. An entire natural gas field will be needed to provide the energy to retort, but that's ok. Who cares if Canadians have to shiver a bit during their bitter winters, as long as Americans get to keep importing 60-65% of their crude oil needs

But I'm being silly. Please, tell us what you would do, if you were in charge

Actually, most drivers of "tiny cars" - Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, etc - are getting angry with owners of large fuel guzzling pickups. Part of it is because owners of fuel guzzling pickups drive like such tools. That's the one thing I miss about Utah, I could have popped a few caps at a tailgating numnut

Around 3 years ago a pasty middle aged guy cut me off, then flipped me off, during a blizzard in his big hairy manly Ford pickup. The stars aligned, because less than 20 km down the road, there he was in the ditch at a curve. He seemed pretty relieved when I stopped

Did I mention I'm built like a gorilla? I worked him over pretty good, taught him a lesson he'll never forget. Kind of typical how some scrawny pasty little s*** thinks they're so tough behind the wheel of a big bad pickup. Never mind driving at prudent speeds for the conditions

So, did they chop off the DPF? How were the PM10, NOx emissions? Every Hand Cal Dodge Cummins I've seen around here has a straight pipe exhaust you can hear a mile away, and every time the light turns green is this giant cloud of black diesel soot

Know what's sad? There was a Texas oilman running the US for two terms. You'd think he would have "solved" the high fuel prices. ACtually, it appears he caused the high fuel prices

I have no vested interest in who wins this fall. Hopefully, Obama will win and follow through on his promise to axe NAFTA. With the Canadian dollar so high, it would do a lot of good to send NAFTA through the shredder once and for all.

Anyhoo, carry on with your rebuttal. This thread is getting *very* interesting, even the other Texan is resorting to childish whining

Oh jee-zus, this is TOO EASY!

Sudbury Earth Decade Committee Prius vs. Hummer Analysis Debunked

Yes, that is an official Sudbury site

If you don't know how to do so, near the top of the page is a feature called "Search" You would have found a very long and detailed response concerning the Prius-nuking-Sudbury bulls***

Guess what created the acid rain fallout over 50 years of operations at Sudbury? The incredible demand from the US.

I figure the Americans should be paying to clean up Sudbury and area, not Canadian taxpayers
