When will they start discounting the Gen 4's?

It depends on if you're planning to drive into a bridge abutment (go with the Prius) or an Avalon (go with the F150). Mass doesn't do you a damn bit of good unless you're ramming into another vehicle - reinforced concrete kinda trumps 'em all. So the F150 is best if you can count on other people driving something smaller so your greater inertia can force them to suffer more of the impact than you.

Far as I'm concerned, that's some pretty evil BS. It turns driving into an arms race, and hell, we may as well all drive Brinks trucks.

I have observed far too many incompetent and inattentive drivers, and the majority of them seem to be driving the largest passenger vehicles. I may have been sensitized by many years of touring on motorcycles, and having to pay close attention to the drivers and their vehicles as a matter of survival (!), but it's a generally true paradigm in my experience.
A couple years ago, I overheard a co-worker talking about his wife and how she had had multiple at-fault accidents, so he 'put her in the biggest SUV he could find "to keep her safe"' I joined their convo, and asked him nicely where she had learned to drive. "Oh, I taught her myself", was his response. After I was done choking on my coffee, I then asked him if he had considered getting her more driver training. "Naw, she's not too patient or a good student, so I put her in a bigger truck so now she's safe!"...

I had a powerful urge to throw him under the nearest SUV at speed. So, rather than actually addressing the problem directly and making things safer for everyone, it's OK for you to put every other driver on the road at even greater risk, as long as YOUR wife is safe?!

I was stunned speechless. His was one of the most selfish, ignorant, and lame responses, and attitudes, that I've ever encountered. Worse, IMO it's become far too common an attitude these past couple years and a major part of why I've hung up my riding gloves. I don't want to end up eating her grille the next time she or her ilk run another red light because she just had to update her FB status...

I checked TrueCar again to see how the prices are today, as compared to February when I bought.

I paid $25109 (even without the $1000 Toyota discount) and price included the $850 transportation fee, and Blizzard Pearl paint. When I was shopping 7 different dealers, that was the best price. Prius Chat Dianne couldn't even beat that.

I'm happy. Did I get screwed? Beats me. It's my retirement present to myself. I retired at age 54... Seven years later, at 61, I finally treat myself. It's a nice car that will last me the rest of my life.

 

well it was a real struggle to get the sea glass pearl, Harvest Beige Fabric SofTex, ATC/CP: but I was able to get one with extras for 33,032 about 1,333 off MSRP (dealer had to do a truck trade) . IT was looking like I would have to order one or go to CA to get what I wanted and drive it back (been there , done that with Gen 1 to Gen 2). of note in Lebanon Tn right now for the job

 

I secretly hope gasoline goes back up into the 3.50-$4.00 range. Reason why is that the resale value of Prius will go back up, meaning I could potentially trade in my 2015 for a 2016 or 2017 and not lose so much as I would right now.

 

Trouble we found is that most places here added Micky mouse options to boost up the msrp stickr price, thanks to the southeast Toyota monopoly. Had to locate a type 4 with ATP and PCP with a sticker of $33180 then started negotiation.

As the resale value of the old car goes up, the willingness of the seller to discount goes down. In "the good old days" every Prius sold at MSRP. You could choose to buy the car sitting in front of you even if you didn't like the package or the color or it would be sold to the next person standing in line. The only time you saw 4 Prius on the lot at the same time was when the truck was unloading.

 

I'm willing to pay MSRP for the Gen.4 just don't want to lose as much or carry over much onto the new car from the old car. Pay as much off as possible lol.

 

West Virgina isn't too far from here - come over to Columbus, OH to pick one up! There are a bunch in stock here and I got my Prius Four ATP+PCP for ~$500 under invoice with only a little negotiation needed + the 0% APR for 60 months.

 

Did you mean $500 under MSRP (window sticker)? Or off the actual dealer "Invoice" price?

 

Pro tip (yes, I know you know this): If you "secretly" place $2 per gallon into a savings account each time you fill up, you'll have around $500 per year to put towards your next car

And as Jim N said upthread, discounts on Gen 4's will come more quickly if gas prices stay low...and people on this board are already saying they are being offered Gen 4's for well under MSRP. Heck, in my neck of the woods Toyota's already offering 0% financing for 60 months on Gen 4's...

If gas prices are over $3.50, it's pretty certain that Gen 4's will sell at MSRP, and the 0% financing would llikely go away.


Assumptions:
- assuming gas stays in the $2 range...
- that would be around $18 for each 9-gallon fillup.
- If you are putting, say, 13,500 miles per year on your car, you will fill up 2.5 times per month.
- That means you would be saving $540 per year

 

Off dealer invoice; well, the "true car" invoice (which aligned to what they said was also their invoice without knowing I had true car data pulled, but who knows if "invoice" is the true invoice price these days).

I presume they'll make money off my 2011 Prius trade though. Gave me $10k for it (KBB trade-in value was 9k-11k) but they have it listed for sale at $12.9k.

The dealer did mention they were trying to reach an end of month quota to bonus, so that may have influenced their willingness to budge more on negotiations with me after a few hours of me standing firm and only coming up slightly, but I still don't believe it was a steal of a deal. There are a ton of 2s and 3s available in Columbus. Only a few 4s here or there though and then some don't have PCP (which I wanted); the one I got happened to have just come in a day earlier to the dealer with ATP+PCP in one of my preferred colors, so I do believe I lucked out in that aspect.

 

Thanks for that Invoice clarification and info. When there is a trade involved, they always have more room to wiggle (on paper).

When I worked for a high end brand dealership, I saw some crazy things happen on the last day of the month. That was the only time I ever saw deals taken for less than Invoice! We sometimes brought out the actual Invoice to show a customer. Although this was 10 years ago, when Online info was just starting to become common and the information was always right on (depending on the options and destination charges). Customers would bring in printouts they were right on.

Of course, the "Dealer Invoice" is never the full story of what a dealer pays. There is much more to it. "Dealer Holdback" is what it's called, and that amount is never known (or reviled) to the customer.

As a brand, Toyota typically has lower margins (again on paper), because they're dealerships are such high volume. Manufacture incentives to the dealer play a large roll and we are never privy to that info. This is why the last day of the month is always the best time to buy.

As employees of this particular dealership I worked at (a high end non-Toyota brand)... the best they would give us hardworking employees... was only $100 over Invoice. Anyway... I digress.

Having been on the other side of the desk, I used to have a very serious car addiction. I've been on car sobriety for almost 10 years... but I'm about to fall off the wagon now.

 

Hehe, good luck and I hope it all works out! Nothing wrong with breaking that sobriety for a great deal especially if you can snag 0% for 60 months with it. Why front any money if Toyota offers it for free and your savings can keep earning interest or saved for another emergency

 

For those playing the waiting game, things are definitely getting more complicated for this year. A shakeup in Saudi leadership and Canadian wildfires shutting down tar sands oil production make predicting gas prices this summer a mug's game. Given the ridiculous short-termism of shoppers for this supposedly long-term durable good, Prius prices could rise with those at the pump. I guess I'm saying waiting out the product-launch excitement isn't quite the one-way bet I'd assumed earlier this year.

 

Yes, you're probably right. There's no right strategy. I made the mistake of test driving... and now I'm hooked.
