The latest CD is 2003.2, which unfortunately I do not have. ...
I think the SIB says is if you have a DVD based.

How can you download the rar files without joining as a memeber? It tells me the files are larger than 400Mb.

I downloaded the versions 9 & 10 of the disk, but I haven't had the courage to try it yet. Instead I wanted to see if I could create a backup disk of my original gen 5 5.x version of the disk first to test my disk burns. No joy. I think the biggest problem is that I can't set the book type correctly on my Mac.

I have Windows 7 available to me in a virtual machine, but that didn't work either. I have my stock SuperDrive in my Mac Pro, but I was using my second optical drive, my LG UH08LS10 (Blu-ray) that has DVD+R DL capability to do the burns.

Yeah, it was $9 for the lowest level and I was able to get everything. Not a big deal.

I can send anyone out the ISO files for whatever version(s) they think they need but for an 06+ car, good luck getting it to work!

I've been trying to get this to work for the better part of the weekend. Here's what I did and some observations...

    First my equipment:
Mac Pro Octocore with 16 gigs RAM and 2 TB RAID installed in the four drive bays. I have the stock Optiarc AD-7170A in one bay and a HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW US08LS10 (LG Blu-ray) in the other bay. I have Toast 10 on the Mac side and I'm running both Vmware's Fusion 3 and Parallels 6 running Windows 7--both have Imgburn (latest) on them. I'm also using Verbatim 8x DVD+R DL disks that show up in Imgburn as MKM-003-00.

    Secondly...burning experiences:
Running Toast on the Mac while trying to do this is a huge pain, so I won't dwell on it too much except to say you can't set the book type on Toast, so to hell with it.

After many googling hours looking for information I came to the conclusion that if you try to burn a disc for a gen 5 system and it's not right, you'll run the risk of updating the firmware and getting stuck with unreadable map data--while making your factory disk useless. So my focus was on getting a back up disk made of my version 5 disk that I have in my 2006 package 8 Prius--to test the burn process only.

So I started with Fusion/Win 7. While using Imgburn, I couldn't set the book type to DVD-ROM as Fusion would crap out errors saying that the drive was pushed into PIO mode and not DMA mode and that I'd have to trick it by putting the drive in SCSI mode. I found several old posts via Google saying that this won't work. Fusion was being a bitch about switching it to SCSI, so after a couple of hours I gave up and switched to Parallels.

After creating a new Win 7 VM in Parallels for this project, I was ready to try it out. Same issues coming back at me with the IDE and even SATA assignments for the drive. I switched it to SCSI (much easier to do in Parallels, btw) and bingo!--I could set the book type to DVD-ROM. So I took the ISO of the factory disk that I created in Toast and started the burn per the instructions here. The burn completed, but the verify failed. I tried the disk anyway and the nav system didn't recognize it.

So I tried to do everything in Imgburn...I made an image from the factory disk and then tried to burn it. This time the burn wouldn't even start as it stated that the optimal L0 sectors needed to be in multiples of 16. The image of the factory disk number was off by a more than a hundred. So I'm starting to think that the factory disks may have specific layer break points which may be another reason why consumer disks and software can't handle the task.

Some here have stated that they have made back up disks and I'd like to know if they could go into more detail. Has anyone had any luck with this?

to clarify and add to the post above^^^
my 2006 prius with package 6 I tried to upgrade to gen 5 9.1 and 10.1 both to no avail. one of them updated the firmware and took away my agree screen. But the old version 5.1 data disk still works.

I have only ever read success stories for gen4. I have never seen a success story for gen5. I would be willing to bet if you put your burned disk into a Lexus with a gen5 nav system, it would work.

My strategy would to be find someone with a Lexus gen5 nav and go in 50/50 on the cost of a new factory disk. Then make them a copy and keep the original.

you got a deal...every 8.1 on ebay I see is at least $70. $70 to have 2 year old POI's seems a bit silly to me

the 9.1 discs are going for $150 used on ebay...nuts

Hey guys, I tested the Gen5 9.1/10.1 on a '07 4Runner and it was successful. I also looked into the Gen5 Prius some more and noticed a lot of owners mentioning that the Gen5 Prius cannot correctly read recordable dyed discs, but only factory pressed discs.

Thank you for the info. You can download Gen4 10.1 rev for 2004 or 2005 Prius Nav system here....
Lexus Toyota North America Navigation DVD Gen 4 v 10.1 - Demonoid
It's an ISO file which, with a Mac, you can burn with Disk Utility (or Toast etc.).
Use Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R DL discs to burn.
Then, insert in your Nav system under the drivers seat.
From behind the drivers seat open cover by pressing down on both latches. Start car, push eject button in and to the left.
Remove old DVD. Insert yours then push button in and to the right.
    Replace cover.
    Start cruising!
It's still a crappy Nav system. I love my Tom Tom with Traffic but this will do in a pinch.

I would never order a Nav system in a car again.
For $150 you can get a great Tom Tom or Garmin system with traffic updates.
Makes my day in heavy traffic.

Depends on which manufacture you go with. Acura has one of THE BEST manufacture navigation system, which I sadly did not get on my ex-TSX, which was broken into and had my $500 Garmin stolen.

The Prius navigation is quite pathetic though.

Now I'm just wishing for a Google based navigation/console.:D

How many DVD's do you have to burn? After extracting all 6 files of 10.1 Gen 4 do you burn all files to one disk?

    Thanks for your help!:)

There will be one filw after you unzip ( extract ). That file is .iso file and need to be burned on one DVD+R DL.

Scroll back up and you will find the guide how to do it.

I read somewhere that once you put the new Gn4 10.1 DVD in the Nav drive, you can not go back to your old original Gen4 DVD.

    Is that true?

Please comment on it before I go and try the Gen4 10.1 on my system.

    Thanks.
