What's the farthest anyone bikes to work here?

I only need to bike about 6 miles but was disappointed to find the roads too dangerous. My area of Virginia is less than hospitable to bicyclists.

I used to ride my bike to work in Kansas a rather short 4 miles. The hills and weather always made it interesting and I could sometimes beat the cars home if the traffic lights went my way. It was always fun to see a car drivers face when you beat them home on your bicycle. Of course, I usually needed a shower and a change of clothes...
