450 give or take usually put in 9.5 to 9.9 gallons.

DTE? Mine showed 547 miles after today's fillup, 540 miles after a fillup last week.

How many miles do I actually drive on my tanks? That varies enormously, from 175 to 620 miles, depending on the specific situation and the opportunities to harvest cost effective fillups.

My first tank I filled up when it was empty and it said 601 DTE, now it says about low 500's. Weird.

Not weird at all. It uses recent past performance to predict future results. Because MPG is quite variable depending upon circumstances, and because at your first fillup, that history is mostly the factory initialization with very little of your actual driving rolled in, the 'forecast' can shift quickly. It should become more stable after a few tanks.

I guess the previous owner drove much more conservatively than my wife. We're about 4-5 tanks in and it's never gotten close to 600 again.

Well I'll weigh in: usually get around 450~500 kilometers between fill-ups. Because, I fill up anytime the gas gauge has dropped below 1/2. Sometimes right on 1/2. Even that means a fill-up every 3~4 weeks. I do this for a couple of reasons:

    1. I can fill up when it's convenient, at a station of my choice. No last minute run to get gas, zero risk of walking down the highway with a gas can.

    2. Since I've been tracking tanks almost since purchase: I don't want anyone else tanking up, maybe not recording the odometer reading (my primary calc aid), or resetting the trip meter (not that big a deal).

Usually about 400-450 highway miles when the last bar starts flashing. Then I have about 100 miles or so to fill it up.
