What Price Are you being quoted by the Dealer?

    Midpack, you have the right strategy. Patience can be a blessing. But I have to interject that you will most likely have to wait longer than 4-5 months. I just got my build numbers over the next few months. And it ain't pretty.

    June: 1623 total
    July: 1250 total
    August: 669 total

    That means that if gas prices continue to rise and toyota is cutting production for the US by 60%, it will mean that prices are going to go through the roof. Again, I see no flaw in you waiting, but I don't want someone on here to think that if they just wait a month or so, dealers will be giving them away. Even if I have 15 on the lot (which I don't), I still won't be discounting them knowing that I won't be able to replace it easily come august and september. Right now, I am sold out through the month of June and halfway into July with two exceptions. A black III and a silver IV. Both are base models.

    Toyota plays too hard ball we will sit in a Honda Insight and pretend its a Toyota. Insight you can def get under msrp plus the msrp starts lower...

    Reducing production to keep up the price ... nice trick

    same trick the gas suppliers are doing ... oh using less no problem we will make less too,

    leesburg toyota (northern va) just started today taking orders - they didn't do pre-ordering). straight msrp plus 399 processing (their standard processing fee on all deals). they add a $295 "appearance protection" dealer add-on that they say goes on "every car we sell" but will delete it if you press. also - mats, and they don't know yet but probably also cargo net and locking nutz. sales guy i talked to is nice guy named paul at 7037718990. as of right now, i think they have only 2 preference orders against their first allotment

    that is complete BOGUS ... that translates to $600 over msrp... so dealer makes that 600, +holdback + markup.....

    That is the beautiful thing about this country. Freedom of choice. If you want an insight, with all its downsides, that is your right. Might as well buy a yaris then. Save another 5k over the insight and get the same gas mileage.

    And I highly doubt Toyota is doing this on purpose. They have already said they are running at full capacity to produce these. Other markets need them too. Japan, Canada, Australia, etc.

    True but when you dont have it in the budget sometimes you just have to settle for what you can afford. I would rather the Telsa, all electric, but my accountant says lookin like the Honda. the Yaris is yuckie. (http://www.newcars.com/toyota/yaris/reviews/honda-insight.html) How are they running at capacity when it was just quoted they are reducing by 60
    % in production... did i read wrong? Ill re read.

    I was hardcore prius too ... but then the sportability in driving turned me more Honda... price seems like will tip the scale to honda.

    No, you just missed some of the other news -- pre-orders for the new Prius in Japan are topping the old record, set just a couple months ago by the new Insight, which itself smashed the prior record. When Japanese customers are having to wait 5 months while American pre-orders are running behind expectations and somes car are already sitting on the lots unsold, it just makes business sense to rebalance production plans. Switch some American-model capacity to Japan-model capacity.

    I used the wrong terminology. Allow me to correct myself. Toyota is cutting the allocation by 60%, not production.

    As far as Honda goes, they build a great car. Honda has, for the last few years, turned to more spirited drivibility. But, the ride quality suffers. It really is up to you and your personal preference. Although, I have heard, but not experienced for myself, the Honda sounds like an inferior product. Excessive engine noise, door noise (when closing it's a tink, not a thunk), exhaust note, etc. Plus, the Prius gets better gas mileage.

    In the end, it always comes down to your own checkbook though. I would love to buy a Bentley. My checkbook says otherwise though.

    Ahh i see...

    Cutting allocation effectively for us still means less supply so good way to keep MSRP prices. Honda is selling left and right under MSRP.

    Honda may be selling them for under MSRP, but they aren't sell a lot of them. At least not by me. I have a Honda store 3 minutes from me. I see 5 on their lot. Presumably the same five, as they are in the same order, that I saw last week.

    But again, I sincerely wish you luck with your Insight. It is a nice car for the money.

    Great. Detroit can't sell a car even if they just about give them away and Toyota can sell cars for above MSRP.

    There are risks & unknowns to buyers and dealers (although most won't acknowledge it), and I accept that. The dealers job is to convince the buyer of 'bird in hand,' and it works more often than not. Worked on me for the first 10-15 years of my car buying life. Car sales are at historically low levels, a buyers market to be sure. The rise in gas prices is partly due to summer blends, that will end this fall - hopefully people have seen this cycle enough times to not be fooled again. When there is more inventory and the initial wave of buyers has been satisfied, (there's no certainty but) odds are there will be discounting on even the new Prius. I am not expecting miracles like buying anywhere close to invoice, my target is $1000 below MSRP with no adds, and my local dealer has already offered $250 off on his first two! My ride runs like a top, so I can wait to Fall if necessary.

    We will see, my approach has worked time and time again and there's no doubt the downside risk to my approach is historically small now. The likelihood that I will have to pay more later than today is almost nil IMO, so I am no worse for waiting.

    Most people I know hate to buy cars, they can't stand negotiating and wondering if they made a good deal (and they usually don't). I think buying cars is great fun, it's all about finding middle ground, and most people I know leave way too much on the table for the dealer. Dealers do this every day, so they are better prepared that (most) buyers. I have paid MSRP once (Audi TT when they first came out, wife just had to have it), and I've bought for $150 over invoice (Volvo 850) and everything in between.

    Thanks for your reply, you do dealer Reps proud here --- if you were closer I would seek you out to buy a new Prius. I hope you do well...

    You guys are starting to dissapoint me :) I may not have had a Bently, but I'm giving up Infinity's, BMW's and Sports cars to drive a hybrid. The checkbook didn't have anything to do with it for many of us. I'm here because it's what I think is the right thing to do.

    In reality, even if I had more money than I knew what to do with, the thought of spending $300k on a car, something that will depreciate, makes no sense to me. I was just using an extreme example.

    You are 100% correct. Since most dealers in the chicago area are at MSRP, and practically none have ever gone over that, there is no downside to waiting. Since you have the time and are in no hurry, your plan is pretty much foolproof.

    I got an online quote from North Hollywood Toyota for MSRP. Also try the internet sales mgr. at Manhattan Beach Toyota. He told me that they are quoting at MSRP, not over like many dealers.

    Visited Ed Morse Toyota today in Delray Beach, Fl. They have a Prius IV on the floor with a Dealer Markup of $3395.00. I said thank you and walked out.
    Earl Stewart Toyota in Lake Park, Fl. has NO Dealer Markup. That's were I'll be going for my Prius V. They are only about 40 miles north of my home.
