i like everyone prefers the high fat options... mocha almond fudge is a favorite, but lately its sherbets, preferably key lime or raspberry... less than 5% calories from fat...and i also have issues from lactose as well although it has never stopped me from ingesting the stuff...
Notwithstanding different levels of ingredients (butterfat, whole eggs, egg yolks, egg whites, air), different methods of preparation, different methods and temps for storage and eating, etc., I still consider gelato -- and also frozen custard -- as ice cream.
Well if we're not making distinctions between various frozen desserts, then I'll go with my mother's homemade rosemary sorbet as a favorite.
I think that sorbet is not ice cream (and undoubtedly your mom's rosemary sorbet is yummy). But I think gelato and frozen custard are ice cream. No matter, it's all good (except the stuff that isn't lol).

In San Francisco, there's a great creamery called Bi-Rite. They make an amazing Salty Carmel and a delicious Lavender Honey...mmm.....so good! Humboldt Creamery makes a mean vanilla too! AND! It's the vanilla that Kirkland (i.e. Costco) sells! Trivia for the day...
