What is up with all of the Prius Hate ???

National average for U.S. drivers is 12,000-15,000 per year. Boopie is well on the left side of the bell curve!!!

Using that National average:

15,000 miles / 15mpg * $3.60/ga = $3,600/yr

15,000 miles / 50mpg * $3.60/ga = $1,080/yr
...............
$2,520/yr

That is a big difference for the average U.S. driver and huge when extrapolated over the lifetime of a vehicle.

100,000 miles / 15mpg (6666ga) * $3.60/ga = $24,000

100,000 miles / 50mpg (2000ga) * $3.60/ga = $7,200
.............
$16,800

I paid off my 2005 Prius after about 140,000 miles of driving just in gas savings vs. my 2001 GMC Sierra Z71 twin-turbo (14mpg avg.). After that payoff (out of the red) the rest if just bonus savings.

I don't mean to call you out, boobie. Just giving the facts for the average driver and not those on the far ends of the curve like you and I.

 

Nasty video -- you could see the truck swerving way before -- I wonder why they did not slow down? Maybe a young driver - some SUV's do not handle well on the highway


For many the fuel cost savings is still not enough - if I had a long commute and I had to drive certain roads every day I would not want to drive the Prius.

 

Larry, you were one of the smart folks who purchased the Powerstroke equipped Excursions. I always shook my head at the ones who bought the gasoline version. lol

I always said that my next truck would be a diesel. Way easier to mod, more durable and they get better gas mileage!

Last time I filled up my Jeep I calculated 30 mpg, which is incredible for a Jeep. After a few seconds of thought, I realized that I must have forgotten to reset the trip meter after the last fill-up, which means my mileage is actually closer to 15.

That was at approx. 400rwhp. At 550rwhp it went 12.1@110mph. Then we took off the rear-mount turbo and added traditional twin-turbos and it made 719rwhp (5200lb raceweight). I never ran it at that power level. I sold it to my buddy who owns Synergy Motorsports. It got horrible gas mileage and was really a gross polluter so that is why I sold it. This is also why I cannot claim smugness driving my Prius. I can just say that I am not trying my best to do better.

BTW, it sounded awesome even at low power levels.

Funny that you mentioned that !!! Just YESTERDAY I went to a local Toyota dealer that had 2 C's in stock. I was DYING to see it and drive it. After the test drive, which was fine, I parked it next to a V to compare them. I was astonished to see that the difference in yearly fuel usage between the V and the C was ...... $200 .... about $15 a month. The V was rated at $1300 per year, and the C was rated at $1100 per year. The C I drove was the 'Habanero' color ... probably about the most hideous orange color I've ever seen on a car. I suppose it would be good for visibility though.

The C ... on their 5 mile 35-50 MPH test loop garnered about 56-57 MPG after resetting the trip meter. I then drove a used 2010 LB on the same course, after resetting the trip meter, and I got 51.2 MPG. I have ZERO doubt that the C will absolutely HAMMER the EPA estimates if driven in a primarily city and rural environment. I think it will be less impressive on the highway though.

I was amazed at how tiny the C was. You don't notice is so much inside as you do from the outside. It is TRULY TINY. Considerably smaller than the Honda Fit ... about 4 inches shorter, and 2 inches less tall. If people are gonna sit in the back .... they better be real small because with the seats adjusted for adults in the front, there is virtually NO legroom in the back seat.

Overall a very nice little car for 2 people when not a lot of highway driving will be done.

I would think the prius haters just hate people paying higher for their cars with lower powerful motor and engine combination instead of pure monster engine at the same price.

While modern emission controls have cleaned up the exhaust well enough foil numerous suicide attempts, that doesn't mean it is safe to breath, as illustrated in an earlier thread: Toyota sued in carbon monoxide tragedy. The linked article also mentions an additional similar fatality.
