What is the point of the key included with the Keyfob?

You don't even have to push the button. Just hold the fob close to the Start button while pressing the brake pedal.

 

From what I see, the extra key lets you do two things:

1) If the Prius 12V battery in the trunk is dead, it lets you open the door to fold the back seats to release the hatch door from the inside. This way, you can reach the 12V battery.

2) If your keyfob battery is dead, it lets you start the Prius. Hold down the brakes to light up the Start button. Hold your keyfob near in front of the Start button for a few seconds, then press the Start button with your foot still pressing the brakes.


Either way, if you have to resort to using the key, then it would be a crappy day.

for everyone that is not land locked or is active and likes to go swimming. you can use the metal key when you go to the beach. just leave the fob part in the gas cap . the reason being is that when the fob is in the gas cap.

a. someone cannot steal it
1. the gas cap can only be opened from the inside.
2. the fob is outside of the door sensors' range
3. the fob is also outside of the push button sensor range
b. you have a metal key that is water proof.
c. the fob must never be submerged.

One other reason.
When shopping or whatever, When its very cold out I turn off everything but the heater/defrosters and set the temp. at 65. I then use the key to lock the doors. The key fob won't lock the doors when running. With the temp at zero yesterday it was great getting in a warm car.
It actually uses very little gas since it cycles on and off. It's better then using the remote start on my Camry which has to run 20 min. to get the interior toasty if you happen to be 30 feet or closer to activate it!! Just wish the key was bigger. Tough to use with my big hands.
