    The Edison battery was nickel-iron with a potassium hydroxide electrolyte. This would have been easily recycled if for some reason the battery failed. In contrast, a lead-acid battery stores a significant chemical content in the electrolyte which complicates recycling.

    Batteries too damaged to use for EVs can be used for other purposes for a short time. Engine blocks are melted down and used to make new steel. Steel is by far the most recycled material in modern society - over 95%. Many steel manufacturing plants don't even have the ability to use ore - only recycled materials.

    In the 21st. century USA you could never get permission to build tanks full of explosive carcinogenic liquids into vehicles. We do it now because it predates our modern safety hysteria.
