Plates in Southern Ontario cost $74 per year ($37 in Northern Ontario). A pre-requisite to getting the tags renewed is passing the Ontario DriveClean emission test ($40) every second year for any vehicle over 5 years old.

Fortunately, hybrids are exempt from emission testing, so it saves me the hassle and a small amount of cash... yet another perk of this wonderful car. :D

In Colorado, we've paid on a number of levels. I paid about 8 1/2% sales tax on purchase, and paid about $450 the first year in licensing fees. That decreases each year - this is year 3 (I have a 2005) so I should pay just over $300 or so.

Oh, and I still can't drive it in our HOV lanes, because the state DOT has drug their feet since the beginning of the decade.

Arizona also has the big ad valorum tax.

It's $8.25 registration + $1.50 air quality fee + $.60 postage + $372.54 vehicle license tax. The HOV plate fee is $10, but is just one time only.

The car starts valued at 60% of the MSRP, and depreciates 16.25% each year. The tax is 2.8% of the adjusted value.

To expand on a previous post, Wisconsin's $55 vehicle registration goes up next year to $75, as some state politicians like building more roads in their districts that they can't afford to maintain. I pay an additional $15 for a personalized plate. Inspection for emissions occurs every two years at no additional cost (unless you flunk the test!). Also, and maybe best reserved for a separate thread, we pay 30.9 cents on every gallon in state taxes which are supposed to be dedicated to transportation (but then we all pay less 'cause we buy less gas!).

let's see....i've lived in so fla now over 12 years now. the initial costs for tags differs from county to county. i think i paid about $197 total for tags & license.
we did have an inspection a few years ago. i think it ended about 6 years ago... seeing as i was here when there was one- so it didnt end in the 70s....(i wasnt here then!) i think it cost like $6-10 when it was here.
now to renew my license it costs about $36/yr. in fla there is no state tax..

they still only do that in madison and milwaukee, right? when i lived in la crosse and winnebago/calumet/outagamie counties we had no inspections.

Appx $150 for the '04 CA Prius hybrid registration
Appx $300 for the '06 MT RX-400h hybrid registration. In MT, fees are divied up by a car's newness. Highest, if the car is new, virtually nothing if the car is something like 10yrs old or maybe a few years older ... and fees somewhere in the middle for 'slightly old cars'. Think about it, you can drive a Ferarri Testerosa for fees next to nothing (and I'll squeal like a girl when a logging truck kicks a rock up into the windshield :p )

    edit:

    oh wait, here it is:

    0-4 Years: $217
    5-10 Years: $87
    11 Years +: $28

I think a tag (or the subsequent stickers) cost 20 bucks here. Annual inspection was somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 bucks until a couple of years ago; now we have emissions testing, and that brings the cost to $29.
