What did you do to ur Gen III Prius today????

It sticks out more than I’d like and drops about an inch below the oil pan. That is the only down side I see causing issues. Other than that I am happy and look forward to getting my engine oil analysis at 100k miles.

    After a rash of converter thefts in my city, I bought the Auto Defender off eBay. I’ll get some security torx screws and use my rivet nuts that I already have on hand to install it.

    They did arrest one guy, but he obviously had help. He had been turned away from at least one recycler in the area. $12k in sales to one recycler since May. He had sawzall and stolen cats in his possession when arrested.

    I’ll get some installed pics once the install is complete. It looks really good, and it doesn’t weigh hardly anything. Just trying to slow them down. Make them find a different car.

    I added small cameras to my side mirrors and designed a circuit board to switch the different video feeds (left, right, reverse) based on turn signal being on or reverse gear engaged or manual aux button for anytime/all the time reverse camera on display.
    Here's a basic video of it working-

    Not at the moment although I could probly make that happen with a generic dvr unit. I have a dashcam tho so I'm okay with just that recording for now.


    Basically theres three parts to this-

    1) Adding the cameras and running the wires to the inside of the car

    2) Designing and programming a pcb that has input trigger monitoring and video switching

    3) Locating all the wires I needed to tap into and wiring everything up.


    for 1) I got generic ebay upside down mount car cameras, drilled holes in the bottoms of my side mirrors, mounted the cameras and ran the wires through the mirror, through the door and into the inside of the car through the main rubber door loom.


    for 2) I did some testing and found the wires that run to the head unit from the reverse camera. My idea was to cut the video signal so that I can take the reverse camera signal and patch it into my video switcher and take the other end of the signal that goes into the head unit and use that as my main video input from my video switcher. Instead of physically cutting these wires I found the type of connector using in the harness that plugged into the head unit, and made an "in between" pcb where I did the video signal line splicing and added RCA jacks for easy connection. The rest of the connections just pass through.


    I did some more testing and found the reverse camera screen trigger wire just sends the head unit 12V to access the reverse video screen that has the safe surroundings disclaimer watermarked. I figured I could actually cut this wire, put a diode in series, tap into one side to get the stock reverse signal trigger, and then tap onto the other end to turn on the screen trigger whenever I want.


    I designed a pcb based around an arduino 328, a simple multiplexer ic for video signal switching, and a 4 channel optocoupler to handle the inputs from turn signals and reverse. I put some RCA jacks on for the cameras, and some push terminal blocks for all the wires.


    for 3) I tapped into the center accessory 12V for the power to my board. The board has a switching buck regulator to bring the 12v down to 5v. I also used this tap to power the cameras I added as well. I added an aux latching switch that I also got from ebay that says "rear view camera" which triggers the reverse camera whenever I want and keeps it on until the button is pressed again. I found that behind this aux switch panel is access to left and right turn signal wires which I tapped into. This area behind the switch panel is where I mounted the pcb since it's easy to access.

    The arduino code is very simple.

    If a turn signal is on switch to that side's camera with the multiplexer and use a channel of the optocoupler to trigger the head unit's camera screen. Keep this on until the turn signal has been off for two seconds.

    If the car is in reverse or if the manual rear view button is pressed show the reverse camera with the same process I just mentioned.


    I have an extra RCA jack for a front camera I want to mount under the front license plate because I tend to hit parking curbs quite often.

    I have another aux switch for "front camera" to trigger that one.

    Haven't got that camera yet but will soon.

    The power has been out for a full day here so rather than buy a generator I decided to use the one I already have!

    A quick trip the the local Tractor Supply Company netted me a 1500w 12v inverter. I've read a few threads where people have done this in the past and figured I'd give it a try.

    The Prius is now powering the essentials! The fridge, cable modem and wifi, some lights, the snakes heating and lighting and keeping phones charged. The reptile heating is a steady power draw for the heat mat so the only variable would be the fridge compressor, which seems to spike up to 450 watts when it turns on. That should be safely within the Prius 100 amp fuse limit, although if this outage lasts any longer I'm going to have to find a fuse to put between the battery and inverter, since I'd be quite upset if that fuse pops.

    The engine turns on about every 30 minutes for a minute or two, but besides that it just hangs out in the garage and keeps the juice flowing! Much nicer than the LOUD generators our neighbors are using.

    It's been going the entire day with me checking all connections and wires for heat with nothing getting even warm to the touch, including the 12v. The Prius engine coolant temps stay at or below 200 degrees fahrenheit so no overheating issues with it remaining stationary as expected. I'm using the Dr. Prius lithium battery pack, which is reaching 82 degrees when the car is on and charging, and seems to charge quite quickly when the car is charging.

    The torque screenshot below was taken at the end of a charging cycle, so those are the highest temperatures you'll see after a day of use.

    The window on the right is open, and the garage is open to air at the top so no worries about fumes, especially since the hvac system is off. I'm sure it would be fine regardless, as the car doesn't stay on to charge for long.

    Some more information for you!

    At my current rate of discharge, around 250- 450 watts, each discharge cycle is 22 minutes, followed by 2 minutes of charging from 40% soc to 50%

    If force charged to 70% Soc, the car will take 55 minutes to discharge.

    Not very scientific, but this is the best I can do under my circumstances!
