I loved my 4Runner despite it being on its second transmission. When I bought it, gas was $2 / gal & my commute was 24 miles round trip. Now, at $3.50+ / gal & my commute having grown to 110 miles, the math was easy. I will miss the ability to tow and will be adding a hitch to the wife's minivan soon.

2005 Tahoe. I kept the Tahoe for now. Can't really decide to give it up. Husband has small 2dr Explorer so I have no need for the Tahoe. I give it a month and I will probably ebay it.

My Prius replace a 04 Lexus ES 330. My wife's 09 Corolla replaced a 07 Lexus ES 350. I guess we are committed to better fuel economy over comfort and luxury. I never imagined myself as a tree hugger but the Prius has that effect on people.

Sadly my Prius is replacing my City El EV. I'm self-employed and I've been offered more work further afield. The EV just won't get me there, so I've opted for a second-hand Prius. My partner's Prius replaces her 2.0 litre Honda Prelude.

We replaced a 2003 Jeep Wrangler Sahara.. great fun but lousy mpg - 14 on average. We really had a common thread.. we thought we'd like to start living smaller. We recycle just about everything, put out very little on trash day (if any) and now we're just loving our 51mpg/avg. Still... I'd love to convert a car to total electric! Most of our daily trips are 20 miles or less. Maybe we'll keep the prius and do the plug in conversion someday. Think the price will come down to around 5k sometime?

94 Stealth Twin-Turbo AWD/AWS Re: What car does your Prius replace?

    94 Stealth Twin-Turbo with 125,000 miles. I sold it today privately for $8k as-is.

It has: Full-time all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering, twin turbos with twin intercoolers, 6 speed Getrag, 320 HP stock, 4000 lbs and about 18 MPG driven relatively reasonably.

It was a heck of a car. More GT than sports, given the 4000 lb weight, but wonderful in snow, and stable as a rock at any speed.

Car was $50k new in Canada. I got it 2 years old for $30k. So my depreciation is $22k/12 years or about $1.8k per year. Repairs and maintenance averaged $1.2k per year so thats a total for depreciation, repairs and maintenance of $3k per year. Cool. Add gas and insurance and auto club and licence and my average total car costs over 12 years was $5.5k per year. I only averaged about 8000 miles per year though so my per mile was $0.70 or so. (In Canadian $ which probably averaged $0.56 US over the 12 years.)

There's hyper-miling, then there's hyper-economizing. I'm hoping to do much better than $0.70 per mile or $5.5k per year in the Prius !

Now if my Prius would just get here this week, 1+ weeks later than promised, I'll be much happier. Old car gets transferred Thursday.

We had a Ford Taurus and both daughters recommended the Prius. Then after we had ours for a year daughter number two went out and bought one as her first car.

The Taurus is history along with the 20 or less MPG that it gave us when gas was $2.50 a gallon. Making about 50 MPG average without going out of our way I figure that gas has to go above $10.00 per gallon for me to experience the same cost per mile as in the Taurus. Which leads me to the conclusion that "The Prius is a poor mans car." I think that I will add that to my signature line.

Had an 05 Hyundai Tucson and an 07 Hyundai SantaFe. Oddly, the larger Santa Fe got much better FE, with the same engine (2.7 V6).
    Bye Tucson....Hello Prius.

I'll be trading in my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee (bought new in Oct 1996) once my Prius comes in. I'm glad I could find a gas-efficient car that will still allow me to haul things for my house.

I traded my 1997 GMC Yukon that on a good day down hill would get 14 MPG for a 2008 Prius. Cut my gas bill by 2/3.:)

I am selling my 2004 Silver Ford Mustang GT 40th anniversary edition for a brand new off the boat 2008 Prius base model package 3 spectra blue Prius.

I inherited the Mustang new from my sister so it was never my choice of what to drive - 0 money at the time in a not so friendly to pedestrian city. I would have picked up a more eco-friendly car myself. I'm selling the Mustang finally because of gas prices which ties into my new life as a commuter and the ability to no longer live as a huge hypocrite! i could discuss the finer points of global climate change, the need for conservation and recycling till my face turns blue BUT I DROVE A V8 MUSCLE CAR.

On a more "womanly" side, I like the Prius it's adorable and has a lot of cool shiny things to it

I always have a fun car and a practical car (not including the wife's). My Prius replaced a 1995 Honda Civic VX that used to get 45 to 50 MPG (the sticker quoted 47 City and 56 Highway.) I was shocked when the Prius actually beat it mileage wise not to mention size and safety. They Civic handled better and was more fun to drive, mainly because it was a 5 speed.

My fun car is a 2007 Corvette Convertible. I love it and the Prius equally for totally different reasons.

My 2008 Prius package 5 with after market leather is replacing a 2002 Jaguar X-Type. I'm keeping my 2005 Nissan Pathfinder, for towing trailers and hauling big stuff.
