What about installing a 12v heater for the winter?

dried air from the AC is usually applied to "defrost". melting the ice is accomplished with heat though.

 

I wish the A/C Button on the keyfob could be used to turn on the heat in the winter. That would be like remote start and really cool. It would also warm up the ICE.

 

I usually charge my PIP from 5am-8am.
For the winter I wanted to place an 800 watt, 12 vdc heater on the passenger floor to heat the car and melt the ice off the windows. I would have a remote control switch that would allow me to turn it on from inside the house. While the PIP was charging, I hoped it would also keep the 12 vdc battery charged.

However, I don't think the 12 vdc outlets operate until the PIP is turned on. DAMN.

 

I have a 120 volt 400 watt oil filled heater, tried it the other night, left it on all night at maximum heat settings, when I got into the car the next morning the outside temperature was 47 degrees, inside temperature was 51 degrees, 400 watts is not enough, don't know if adding a second heater would improve the temperature difference.

 

An insulated solar blanket over the vehicle cabin would probably help quite a bit.

for the parking lot during the day. It's also a nice piece of emergency equipment to have on hand.

 

wouldn't you want as much sunlight in your cabin as possible? And during these early times of the season, the windows thaw out during the day. So you would need the heat when it's dawn.

 

and, I'm way ahead of you......the solar blanket would block any heat generated inside the cabin, ice would be on the windows, defeating the purpose of the blanket

 

I'm trying to find the blanket I had in Stockholm. It was like a sheet of bubblewrap covering the top and glass. The inside of the bubbles were coated on one side, shiny out, black in. In the winter you kept the shiny side facing the car, the bubbles were a bit of insulation but removing the blanket made quick work of getting the snow and ice off the car, the shiny surface reflected heat back into the car. The parking spaces in Stockholm had electric outlets for car heaters, and heated parking lots (steam generated at the nuclear reactor I was told).

 

let me know if you find it, and maybe a part number, mfr, etc. could work. cept at night, still trying to figure that one out.

 

I used it at night mainly. I had to park outside on the streets over night. At the office I could park in the heated garage.

Here is the closest I can find at the moment. I emailed a friend in Sweden to see if he can get me some more info.

in fact, the manual specifically states that charging time could increase due to an undercharged 12 V battery
however, as mentioned elsewhere in this thread, the 12V outlets don't work unless the car is in ACC/ON mode.
