I just recently encountered this and I am, beyond the shadow of a doubt, 100% positive it started blinking only tonight. Getting out of work on the night shift, same parking spot in the parking garage, I saw a red blinking light from about 15 parking spaces away tonight. It strikes me as odd that this is "acting as normal" when it decided randomly at 13047 miles on the odometer to just start blinking, but what do I know?

I doubt that. You've just never noticed before. Or maybe your key had better transmission to your car this time as you were walking towards it and it started blinking earlier that before, and you noticed it. It's there every time - described in the manual :)

    FWIW,,,

I too never 'noticed' this light until the evening after I removed my 12 Volt battery to give it a proper capacity test
( not an old school load test ).
Can it be this light can be configured off? Sorry if this has already been addressed.....

Ok, I agree with above findings. I had to boost the my Prius 2 days ago (also not sure why it drained, but when turning on the car, all warning lights were flashing and could not start the car until I gave it a boost), and now notice this flashing light as well. So its definitely related to the 12v battery loosing power. My concern is will this flashing light drain the battery if I leave the car sitting in the driveway for 2 weeks (eg. going on vacation), or does this use very little power that it will not affect the batter charge for a long time.

If car is off and light flashes, it is normal.
If car is off and light does not flash, it is not normal,

The immobilizer system usually kicks in after a preset amount of time. Maybe that is why some people do not notice it at first.

Best test would be for those who have never seen the light flash to go to their cars now and look, then report back... :)

Trying to find info in my Prius manuals (2 came with mine plus a DVD) is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. If they weren't printed on 16lb paper they would not fit in the dash. I suggest you google or find a good attorney to decipher it for you. I remember asking the sales person what are the options that I don't have judging by all the blanked out switch holes in the dash. He sheepishly look at me as if it were the last question he ever wanted asked of him.

This just happened to me today immediately after the auto store plugged in their code reader to see why my Check Engine light was on....(it was code P0505 but that's another question)...then, the car did not detect that I had the key with me as it had for the last 8 years.....I now have to start it by putting the fob in the slot, which I never did before. Maybe I touched something on the fob? I also see a "key" button under the dash, I tried pressing, nothing changed. what's that for?

I think that's what happened to me. This morning, I backed the car out of the driveway enough to get our wheeled recycling container off the sidewalk, but left the key in my pocket with the car running. The car made some beeps, but I continued anyway. Now the light blinks all the time. I've sat in the car waiting for long periods before, and I'm the type that would notice things like that, so I know it's new. The light blinks whether or not the door is open or locked.

Can I get it to stop?

I had that ligh come on once just after i powered up to head home from work. I powered down a couple of times but it didn't shut off till I powered up the next morning so I ignored it. Other than that, I do what you just described all the time. I run into convenience stores to grab a cup of coffee while my wife stays in the car, powered up so the AC can run, with the key in my pocket. The car beeps a couple of times but that indicator isn't lit when I get back in.

This happened to me tonight. I've had the car for exactly 2 months and because I'm still getting use to it I pay attention to everything. This light has never appeared once in the past 2 months. I was worried that it might run the battery down because it won't go off, it just keeps blinking, so I shut the car off and restarted twice but the light is still there. And, it doesn't matter if the door is open or shut.

Speaking as an electronics guy who runs into all sorts of weird stuff, take the battery out of the Fob, reinstall it (or replace it altogether) and see what happens. Since it doesn't seem to be recognizing it. Or put it in the house and try your spare fob. Gotta systematically eliminate variables at this point (first rule of troubleshooting, believe me). That will eliminate the fob as the problem. Then we move on.
