well its expensive... the started kit comes when you get the paint seal done. i looked into what a spare kit would cost and it was ridiculous and it was supposedly dealer cost... but it comes with a bunch of stuff

checked the website and doesnt look like the same place. this place is in stockton ca. according to brosure that comes with box can be ordered at "all" (kinda hard to believe that... most i can believe but all?) new car dealerships or by calling 209-4631600

i will say that i have been very impressed with the fab protection from same company. i had a gel pen that left a dot about the size of the end of my finger on the seat. didnt see if for at 2-3 days... bright pink too... well it wiped off with plain water... was totally floored that it came up so easy. when i first saw the spot i was already pricing seat covers...

    Dave:

What I find odd is that Consumer Reports always tells the car buyer to never purchase these dealer "packs" as it's a waste of money, pure dealer profit, etc etc.

Yet I know folks who have purchased these "packs" such as interior protection and paint sealant, and they seem *extremely* satisfied. Especially the paint sealant appears to hold up well despite all the road salt here.

I'm even thinking of having at least the paint protection done to my Prius. My dealer quoted $320 Cdn for the paint protection and interior protection, with a written guarantee. They had a black 4Runner in the showroom with the paint protection and it looked like smooth glass, even fingerprints easily wipe off.

I'm wondering if Consumer Reports has an ulterior motive behind their stance on things like paint protection and synthetic motor oils??

i wondered about that too. because my sister works at All Star Ford, fab protect and paint seal was only $79 total...

i think Consumers Reports takes a hard look at the value of a product. to be honest with ya, i think the regular price for the service is extreme. i may have not done it if i hadnt gotten the deal i got.

there is the option of getting a good car wax and waxing your car every month yourself. even with the expensive stuff, you could wax your car every month for years based on the price dealerships charge for the stuff.

as for me, i cant tell you what is the cause, may it be the special material the Prius seats are made of, since many here report that its easy to clean or if its the fab protection. i really havent had my car long enough to determine if the paint seal is doing anything. i do know that it prevents water spots very well. i already have water spots on the side windows (dont rain-X them... maybe i should...) but nothing on the car.

realize that my sister does the detailing thing for a living so every time she sees my car, she points out things, like a chip on my front bumper... etc that i dont notice... realize this chip is about the size of a period.

It's a waste to spend hundreds of dollars on something that is about $5 of product and $10 of labor.

Spend $40 on a bottle of Klasse AIO and SG (All-In-One and Sealant Glaze), or equivalent products from Zaino, and an hour of your time, and you'll have better protection than anything the dealer has.

Home users can actually use better products than pros, since pros can't use products that take hours to set between applications, while home users can. For example, Klasse SG protects best if allowed to sit on the car overnight, which is not possible for the pro who has to finish a job within a few hours.

Consumers are satisfied because they have incomplete information, possibly because they just don't care enough to spend the time to educate themselves. Klasse, Zaino, and Poorboys are all brands that most people have never heard of or seen.

Well, that's why I like forums like this, we can become educated.

I had my black 1990 4Runner professionally detailed once. It cost $250 and took them all day, but when they were done it looked *better* than new.

I've always found waxing such a giant PITA and have never had what you would call "good" results. I didn't learn until too late that most over the counter "wax" is highly abrasive and can really bugger up paint, especially the clear coat finish.

I'll look up the products you mentioned. Thanks.

Found this on TreeHugger.com today. http://www.ecotouch.net/

This waterless car wash is both cheap and eco-friendly, and allows you to get a 4oz sample free if you just pay for delivery.

That little 4oz bottle would be perfect for refills and keeping in my Prius at all times.

Err.. Dave, I think we need to reroute some water your way. Our snowpacks on ALL mountains are WAAAAY above average so we might be dealing with too much water come spring time.

We're still allowed to wash our cars manually although the city is thinking of metering water.

I don't know.. at a recent eco-expo, a stall was selling waterless car wash. All they had to show for it is a partially dirty Echo Hatchback and the bottles. When I asked about wax and tyre polish, he said "oh, it waxes and makes your tyre shiny too" At that point, I walked away.

While it may do that, no way in hell will it last. If you want convenience, there's a price to pay.

I would suggest using a microfiber rag to detail with waterless car washes. You don't use water so you wouldn't have a bucket. Everything is waterless.

Dri Wash is pretty good. I have found a product that works better because it is not water based. UltraLuster Wash.
