Warming up the car in winter

You are so logical Bisco. I left my car charging in the garage all night with the heater on. It got 125 degrees inside the car and all my batteries were dead. Warning ! Do not try this.

 

I think they were trolls.

 

If you want instant heat in a Prius, or any other hybrid, light a match, put it in front of your mouth.......and blow !

 

I prefer downing a few shots of gasoline first.

With the FRONT Defrost button off, the Fan and the Windshield/Feet Vent position puts plenty of air to the Windshield. Sure, I would prefer a Windshield-only Vent selection, but I use Windshield/Feet Vent position most of the time, instead of the FRONT Defrost button.

Yes, when my wife is in the PIP, like to dinner every Friday, MPG goes OUT the window.

"I'm cold, turn on the heat."

And she's driving the Gas Guzzler Camero !!!

 

We need to make it very clear. (pun intended) The normal settings work fine if you live in a climate where the heater is required (below freezing for the highs). Just letting the engine cycle on & off as needed is enough.

It's the in-between conditions (cool but not cold) that contribute to "severe", which is counter-intuitive. People could easily assume the extreme instead.

 

If you put your hand far forward on the bottom with max fan, you will feel NO AIR. Now hit the defrost button, notice the huge difference? I used a telltale at the windshield for proof. I definitely agree with your preference, me too. As John has elucidated, the areas that do not have below freezing temps consistently, notice the condensation/fogging. I'll just have to move back to Ultimate Thule.

 

This person wants to know how to warm the engine with out running it, A block heater helps some what and enable ice to warm up quicker. I think an electric water heatr insalled in system might be better . any advice?

 

nothing will help if you don't want to run the ice. you can preheat the block and the coolant all you want, but if you want heat, you'll need to burn some gas. not you, but the op, who seems to have given up on this thread.

 

if you are correct, why would driving 15 minutes ev warm up his engine?

 

Though I guess with the block heater you can significantly reduce the warm-up time, right? So you can use one egg of gas instead of two.

 

yes, but i'm trying to stay with the op's question, even though they don't seem to care anymore. or perhaps they went on vacation and haven't come back yet. op stated, ' if i drive for 15 minutes before turning on the heat, mpg doesn't go down when i turn on the heat. can i warm up the car for 15 minutes in the garage so i can turn the heat on when i leave without mpg's taking a hit?' they stated it 3 different ways, none of which made sense.

 

I beg to differ.....I defrosted my car this afternoon, then drove to Subway which is a mile away.....My MPG when I turned off the car at Subway was 9 MPG.

 

probably would have been 3 mpg if you hadn't defrosted first.
