Wait for Prius Prime ?

This could be a new ball game , better rebate from the federal program , and probably better rebate in Québec ..knowing that GM Canada did NOT reduced the price of the Bolt as they did in the US..
The Prius Prime next generation could be a game changer in Canada if it happens

 

I think that's wise. Even with Toyota, new Generations have come out with unexpected issues that took the engineers a while to iron out. Even the recent Tundra had quite a few little issues and one rather large issue of the wastegate on the turbocharger. It's best to wait until the model has been out 8-12 months before buying, IMHO. I'm, still, not sold on the turbo's in the Tundra so watching how they hold up long-term.

 

Looks like 2018 is the first year, and there was likely a phase in period; the EU's was 2017 to 2019. It also looks like Japan's WLTP is adjusted for their market of lower speeds and higher temps.

Looks like they cut the Extra High(speed) portion. Which means Japan WLTP will be better than Europe WLTP.

Of course, Toyota and the rest are free to use whatever test they want for internal benchmarks, and pre-official numbers.

A JC08 100km will likely be 71km/44miles in the EPA. While I think Toyota could easily make the next PP get over 50 miles EPA, they are going to balance that against a price point, and their battery supply levels.

44 miles is right between the first Volt's and the gen2 one's range. Perhaps GM should have moved its production to another factory

The clutch is a lot cheaper than a more powerful motor.

The 88kW one from the Rav4 hybrid is more likely than the 80kW for a power boost. Besides supply levels, the one for the BEV might not be in a format that fits a hybrid transaxle.

IIRC, the gen2 Rav4 was once Consumer Report's example of how far a first year model can drop in reliability from the previous gen and manufacturer average. that

 

A 50-mile (80-kilometer) range would be great! However, knowing how conservative Toyota is...

 

If you're tall, you may want to get the 2022... assuming you have a choice. The rumors also say the 2023 is lower/sleeker which, to me, means less headroom... which is disappointing as a tall person. In fact, this is what led me to the PP. It is the smallest car I fit into (6'4" with short legs for my height)... any less headroom and the PP is off my list.

 

I placed my deposit June 11 and was told this week I’m at the top of the list. We will see!

 

Note that the Prius Prime Limited is no longer available but the LE and XLE are still being made.

 

Ordered in March 2022in Quebec Canada...dealer told me 3 months.... Called me in August saying that build time is scheduled for end of August and that Toyota Japan will let me know when vehicle will be build...fast forward October 1 and nobody knows anything

 

I ordered a 2022 Prius Prime Upgrade with Technology package on the 9th March 2022. I just checked in today with the dealer to see where I am on the list. They told me I'm number 2 out of 19 orders. At this point they can't confirm whether it will be a 2022 or 2023 model. I hoping for the 2023 model. I would think the plant in Japan would be shutting down the 2022 Prius Primes production to retool for the 2023 models.

 

Toyota has once again announced a reduction in production for Oct down to 750000. What's more they are shutting down a line that produced the prime for a week starting the 8th of October. So...being first on the list (as I supposedly am) may not even help if they don't allocate to the dealership. sigh...

 

Btw, Toyota of Stamford was selling a silver Prius Prime LE for MSRP.

Ordered a Prime upgrade on August 17, 2022. Was quoted 9-12 months. Dealer called me Early September and told me they already allocated one for me and it will be here mid-october. Picking it up in two weeks.
