Yeah, if I could find enough Frank in plugs to get to the Eastern Cali border, I think I'd run out of charge before I got to Vegas.
VW is gonna have to do some serious cheats too get me to buy into this. I guess when they refer to well-equipped they're not talking about range

maybe they could just advertise 'up to 183' miles.

Or advertised, "our electrics - they are way better than our clean diesel".
Or more realistically, just rebadge their Porsche Cayenne plug-in. That would certainly give them a big head start.

However, any changes to the plug necessary to actually support 350 kW charging would be an industry standard (it's CharIN that's doing this, not Volkswagen), and potentially backwards compatible.

The buildout right now, however, will be done with CCS+CHAdeMO combo chargers at either 50 or 150 kW depending on what the application is (freeway charging getting 150, neighborhood charging being biased more towards 50).

Battery chemistries are being worked on specifically to enable high C rate charging - if 3.5 C can be hit, we're in a reasonable ballpark for a larger car. Also note that Tesla's also aiming for greater than 300 kW, and may be rolling it out as soon as the Model 3 launch this year.

The Porsche Mission E will likely be built for such charge rates, and the concept car was originally unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show in the year the West Virginia Tech team was testing diesel cars on the road. So this was something VW has looking into before getting caught.

Plus, such a network in California will be another nail in hydrogen fuel's coffin.

Well, EREV is merely a classification of plug-in hybrid. It means that the vehicle's maximum performance is available in charge depleting mode with the engine off.

Note that the 2016 ELR (with the same hardware as the 2011-2015 Volt) has a Sport mode in which a higher level of performance is available with the engine on, and therefore it's not an EREV.

That also means that the Prius Prime is not an EREV - 121 system horsepower with the engine running, 91 hp with the engine off.

All the Volts have a Sport mode, which works with or without the ICE.

Yes, but the 2016 ELR sport mode has more power than the Volts, by using the ICE in addition to full battery power.

True, but the trans was modified to do it.
