Oh, yes, France and Germany are very well awake, sending 2-5year old diesels to Portugal, and we (less) europeans like those cheap used cars...

Didn't Europe just phase into Euro 6?

Can't recall if it got posted here or in a separate thread, but the EU is suing member states for not sharing test and investigation results into cheaters and for letting VW slide on their cheating.

... Then come president Trump who would loosen all the emission policy and VW dieselsl is good to go again. US would just be aligned with the rest of the world because they were so far advanced when it comes to emission standards.

Might be too soon to tell. Elon musk met with him today & the dialogue has yet to be digested. After all, if you save a lot of gas, you have more fuel to run the rest of Industry - whether it be factories - war machines - hospitals - Etc

It is just as likely that Trump told Musk that all EVs will be taxed to pay for all of the Federal road taxes.

I think that might be it...

I'm not sure what you folks in US think of Trump, but to me he might just listen to complaining car companies (Toyota included disappointing...) and loosen the tightened emission standards in the near future.

Oh well, we all going to die so might as well burn, baby burn!

History shows that world nations have a habit of occasionally electing madmen to leadership. You only have to look to Russia at the moment to see a parallel.

    Maybe that's required for recalibrating?

Well, sometimes you just have to laugh it off at strange things... At least Trump still have some policies which I somewhat agree with. Also he's far from that madman still unfolding in Philippines!

sounds like sour grapes. when does the class action suit begin?

who is the real owner that should be compensated? if a car has been purchased and sold 5 times when the buy back is announced, who gets the windfall?

Source: VW Strikes Deal on Bigger Diesel Engines – Will Mean Mix of Buybacks and Fixes | TheDetroitBureau.com

While some details have yet to be released, the tentative deal that has been presented to U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco authorizes both buybacks and fixes for Volkswagen, Porsche and Audi models equipped with the German maker’s 3.0-liter turbodiesel. The earlier agreement covered 475,000 VW and Audi vehicles fitted with a 2.0-liter diesel engine.
    . . .
The new agreement, according to a statement from the automaker, “would allow Volkswagen to recall more than 75 percent of affected 3.0L TDI V6 vehicles to bring them into compliance with the emissions standards to which they were certified, if appropriate modifications are approved by EPA and CARB.”

That remains a big “if,” however, VW and the two agencies failing to so far agree on a fix that would not only meet emissions standards but be robust enough to last through normal daily use – something that is also required by law.
    . . .

This pretty well suggests the problem was scaling the smaller TDI engines.
