Puerto Rico is already in the queue. Iraq already knows it doesn't work as does the Philippines.

There are no technical barriers to diesels meeting our emissions standards. But VW (cheat dyno), Fiat (timer turn-off), and Mercedes (temperature turn-off) played too cute and now no one trusts them. Worse, the cities of Europe paid and are paying the price.

Is temperature turn-off gaming (i.e. cheating) not more dominant with Opel, Vauxhall and Renault-Nissan than with Mercedes?

Does it matter how much you cheet? ... or - is that how we tend to internalize that "Our company isn't so bad ... because companies like Enron are worse.

In Europe that could be, but if the regulations allow such abuses, is the blame fully on the manufacturers?

The irony is they have air quality regulations and measurements of the air quality that are independent of vehicle emissions. The got so bad they had "no car" days thanks to the diesel overload.

That'll be because the US cars have to meet a far, far, far stricter standard.

I know that... But can you trust what they claim about fuel consumption, power, reliability of affected parts not impacted?

They probably just cheated in a legal way, rather than an illegal one. Australia uses the European standards...

I think we are too lazy to find out whether the fix works or not. Euro4 is still in force, with Euro5 just being phased in last month.

There is no viable fix regarding legal limits, Europe and Australia are definitely dead asleep on this matter.

Euro standard in most things is a pipe dream, dreamt up by politicians and bureaucrats. The one size fits all approach is only good while the sun is shining. Come the rains and the weaker zones collapse under the strain.:sleep:

Agree that it seems they got away with it except for the usa.
On the bright side, there are indicatios that Europe starts to awake from its diesel ediction these days.
