VW Faces $17B Fine for Emissions Scam

    Is anyone asking whether the official tests will changed to better reflect how the cars are actually driven? The take away of the ICCT study (http://www.theicct.org/sites/default/files/publications/ICCT_PEMS-study_diesel-cars_20141013.pdf) that had been posted here long before VW was caught cheating was that the diesels were being designed for the tests, which don't actually reflect what is going on in the real world.

    I have no idea if the TDI advocates understood this layered chart:

    • Both hybrids effectively turn their engines off when slowing down. The Prius control laws require the engine to continue running when over 42 mph so it has one set of consumption dots around 0.4 cc/sec.
    • Both hybrids can use their motors alone in the 10-15 hp range. The Jetta has the greater electric power mode.
    • Both hybrids burn a little more fuel under positive load to put charge into their traction battery.
    • The Prius Atkinson engine has nearly the same fuel consumption rate as the TDI
      • Slightly more when also stuffing charge into the traction battery
      • Slightly less when the electric motor augments the engine
    • The TDI never really slows or reduces fuel flow when slowing but this may be the "defeat device" keeping the NOx warm enough to work.
    I'm hoping some of the TDI advocates might look at the Jetta hybrid. Not as efficient as the Prius, the handling may be more to their taste.

    One of Fred's TDI members got rid of his TDI and bought the Jetta hybrid. He wound up not liking it and traded it in on another TDI.

    Yikes. Jetta hybrid requires premium fuel? Combined with mpg compared to the Prius that puts it way behind financially. There's also the 4.4 cubic feet of trunk space lost. Not a very good looking option.

    Thank God we are not all required by law to buy the same car in life...even a Prius...which I have 2 out of 5 in my fleet.

    On Thursday it was reported that Volkswagen’s EA288 diesel engine was under investigation to see if it cheated on emissions tests, and now the German automaker has made an official statement saying that those engines designed for EU5 and EU6 are not affected. The company confirmed “that no software constituting an improper defeat device as defined in laws is installed in vehicles with EA288 EU5 as well as EU6 engines in the European Union with those engines comply with legal requirements and environmental standards.”

    So I noticed the 2015 Jetta TDI had slightly improved MPG over the three previous years. Is this an EA288 engined TDI?

    Are the 2015 models going to pass?

    Most likely the premium is just recommended. Very few cars actually require higher octane these days. Though higher octane regular can give us higher efficiency cars.
    The 2015 might be the one that started using SCR.

    As too not cheating in Europe, the Euro test cycles are so 'easy' and far from actual drive cycles, just about any on board testing will have results that would appear to be cheating.

    Yes the 2015 Jetta, Golf, and Passat have the EA288 engine. The engine is compliant in Europe. From what I have read, the software switch is still present in those cars, but it is never activated. Whether they meet US requirements is still TBD, although from what I have read, the emissions are within legal limits. The EPA will still want all traces of the cheat code removed however, so there will be a recall at the very least.

    I got that from Edmunds.com which said premium required as opposed to some where they say suggested but it could be mistaken information provided to them.

    So I took the "UDDS HS" data and plotted the fuel consumption rate:

    • Jetta TDI with 'defeat device' continues to burn fuel between periods when the Jetta hybrid and Prius turn off their engine and complete the benchmark on electric power.
    • The Prius and Jetta TDI have nearly identical, peak fuel consumption points BUT the Jetta TDI keeps burning between these local peak events.
    • The Jetta hybrid fuel consumption is significantly greater than the Jetta TDI and Prius.
    • In seconds 660-780, the Prius begins engine runs much shorter than the Jetta hybrid.

    At the TDI forum, I had pointed out that a good engineer needs at least three solutions or they don't understand the problem or the technology. Then the engineer can choose two from: GOOD, FAST, CHEAP.
    • NOT GOOD - Jetta TDI because of NOx so FAST and CHEAP
    • NOT FAST - Prius because of slow 0-60 times so GOOD and CHEAP
    • NOT CHEAP - Jetta hybrid price and fuel economy so GOOD and FAST
    Well that was a long drink of water for "Meet the Volkswagens" but it ends the thread nicely.

    Everyone has the same Jetta TDI, Jetta hybrid, and Prius engineering data in fine detail. The data shows the diesel (and gasser) problem that they are always running. That problem can never be resolved. In contrast, hybrids turn off the engine and sustain motion on EV power. That powerful control law gives even the relatively inefficient, Jetta hybrid engine an MPG edge over the TDI.

    GM also requires premium for the gen1 Volt, but the engine has knock sensors and will run without a problem on regular.

    VW likely says premium in order to get the most out of the turbo, and it could have meant a slightly better MPG on the window sticker

    I have no problem with running the Volt on premium for the few extra pennies. The last time I had to put any gas in the tank was July 11th.. :D
