Well they're anti hybrid, anti EV but very very pro FCV and it appears diesel too. This is a brand new programme whose timing is amazing considering the news.

You'd have thought that being based in London that they'd be against pollution, but I guess the oil biased advertising revenue on their website outside the UK turns their view a little.

I noticed they have a four-wheel drive model and could have been what confused me. I had considered manual vs auto but not the extra drive wheels.

I just glanced at the X5 data on fuelly, and they seem to be averaging around the EPA for the 2013, and lower for the 2014 and 2015. It's a 3.0L and a SUV, so it may not exceed the rating as easily as a sedan with a smaller engine. It is AWD only in the US. 2WD models overseas could be skewing the data too.

This could spell trouble for DI and turbo engines.

Martin Winterkorn was reported to be a "perfectionist", "based on technology",... blahblahblah...,
and the "hard-driving" CEO since 2007.
He was accused of stalled growth in the U.S. market by his former boss Ferdinand Piech.
Well, this brings some complexity to the "Who is most accountable" game for outsiders.

In US of A kids are mostly brought in and out schools by yellow school buses, which are equipped with diesels and no NOx converters. Any of these would expose your kid x100s NOx any cheating VW could master.

But that was from 2008. Emissions standards are trending towards cleaner and hopefully cleaner vehicles replace dirtier ones that get retired.

The VW "clean diesels" involved in this scandal began w/the 2009 model year.

How many passengers on average do the diesel school buses carry vs. an affected VW car? If the cheating takes them to 5 grams/mile, that's half a diesel school bus while carrying WAY fewer passengers.

The issue is more about that they tried to cheat and did not get away with it. VW will be used as an example to the auto industry.

I'm from the UK and even we know about the story of Ford and their Pinto (a model not sold here).

This VW story will be around for decades.

Well, at least VW doesn't have the Massive problem of unintended acceleration and the infamous Floor Mat issues. Now That would put them under.

At any rate, this issue will probably bring the story of how Europe incentivized diesels based solely on CO2 emissions, with no regard for the health of people. But it looked good on paper, and they got to say how Green they were, hardly the case.

Maybe change the thread title now?

    "
Shares of German auto maker BMW (XETRA: BMW-DE) dropped sharply in mid-morning trade Thursday as a German newspaper claimed its diesel engines were "significantly" exceeding regulatory limits.

Auto Bild - a publication owned by Axel Springer - said Thursday in an exclusive report that BMW engines were emitting nitrogen oxide levels that were 11 times more than the current limit set by the European Union.

Citing road tests by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), it said that a model of the BMW X3 was emitting more poisonous gases than the Volkswagen car that is currently at the center of the emissions scandal.

"All measured data suggest that this is not a VW-specific issue," Peter Mock, the Europe Managing Director at the ICCT, told the publication."

Is it anything to do with someone like Bosch who make the control units maybe? They make stuff for all sorts of manufacturers?

Interesting real time pollution map in the above link. Maybe diesel is why Europe is higher than the US?

VW manipulated diesel emissions tests in Europe, says German minister - BBC News

"Germany's transport minister says Volkswagen has admitted using the same fake emissions test in Europe as it used to falsify results in the US."

"Mr Dobrindt said he had been told vehicles with 1.6 and 2.0 litre diesel engines are "affected by the manipulations that are being talked about".

Oh puh-lease! I had the Camry under the recall when it happened. That floor mat thing was idiotic. Ever since I first started driving the first thing I do is check my floor mat to ensure it's properly seated before I drive off. If you aren't intelligent enough to know to check your mats in your car before you drive off you shouldn't be on the road.

Second, I think that gas pedal thing was utter crap. They wanted to shave my pedal to make it shorter so it wouldn't catch on the floor. I told them, "I'm not an idiot and I don't want the pedal to be shorter. I like the longer pedal. Shave it when I trade it in down the road." Friend of mine had a Camry which required the gas pedal assembly to be replaced. It was a US Built one. He said the gas pedal was much stiffer than the one before it. Traded his car in on a newer one when he had the chance.

This VW thing is an action to INTENTIONALLY defraud consumers by INTENTIONALLY lying about their emissions. Big difference between the two issue in this respect alone.

It was not a recall for my '07 Camry since I had the Denso pedal. I took the car in for oil change. When I returned, they informed me that they had removed the clear mat that I have used over the OEM mat and put it in the trunk. They also installed a flat bottom acceleration pedal pad that will not get caught if the floor is pushed under the pedal. That was all!
