And I had a 5% improvement on my best tank ever! Maybe vortex generators, maybe warmer weather? I'd like to think that both had a positive effect.

I think this is starting to change, as MPG requirements continue to increase it's just matter of time before the side mirrors go away. The CT6 has an electric rear view "mirror", although I believe it can be either a display or mirror depending on a button push. somewhat related thing, Colorado does not require side view mirrors. The law says one mirror with a clear view X many feet back. The rear view fills this requirement. A judge agreed with me when driving the Jeep without the doors and side mirrors.
I did something similar myself specifically for cross winds, but I certainly benefited in the gas mileage department. I consistently drive 80-85 for a large part of my commute and while the average pace of the whole commute is about 65-75 I normally average around 60mpg which is better than what I got before I added these two very cheap devices.
I seriously doubt that TOYOTA's design engineers didn't fiddle with everything possible to achieve exceptional CD.
Yep, that was by design inspired by the TRD roof Garnish and a few others who purchased it noticing a huge drop in cross wind effects. My 10 dollar modification was a night and day difference in cross wind effects. The gas mileage effect was unintended, but highly welcomed especially allowing me the same or better gas mileage while going 15mph faster on the interstate and it's been through 2 years of automatic car washes at this point and it's still there.
I agreed, I'm curiously thinking some sort of modification at the top of the windshield in a 3d printed piece to bring the wind up from the windshield over the lip to the roof would possibly be beneficial in bringing that air a little more smoothly across the top of the car so it can breakup down over the window a little better with 60 degree breaks. I see the generators as breaking it up into smaller vortexes that reduce the drag on the back, and you can see it on the back window of the hatch in the rain a bit and less overall dust buildup.
I hate (not really, I actually enjoy it some times) admitting my ignorance, but I saw them and thought “that’s cool”! . I suppose to some on this site that it might be a little shocking that Toyota engineers could actually successfully do something like that!!!!!! AND THEN to think they ACTUALLY continue to improve the design!!! )
