That's way the comparisons to Prius simply make no sense and aren't worth addressing. GM will be rolling out a hybrid and plug-in hybrid. That approach will be for ordinary consumer, the high-volume profit-sustaining vehicles. Volt could be called a specialty design... since it's clearly not what had been hoped as a gave-changer.

You probably won't have heard of most of these but they're all small or medium sized. The Mercedes C class comes in a variety of options and isn't the uber luxury option only that you guys get.

The new Mirage did get them more publicity and notice. The new Outlander may do the same.
But the PHV as been delayed multiple times because of battery supplies and European demand., and it is now projected to cost $40k to $50k in the US.

The new Mirage is cute at first, but with the poor crash rating it received, there are better cars to be had. The Mirage does not seem to be selling well, never see any on the road.

    You're being lazy today;

Outlander Models | Hybrid Electric SUVs | Mitsubishi Motors UK

These prices are 'on the road' so will include delivery, road tax, prep etc. There will be 10% import duty and 20% tax included to make it easy for you to convert into US $'s price. The UK PHEV models start at £28,249, which is cheaper than the PIP which costs £28,349! A 30 mile EV range compared to 12. No contest.

Prius Plug-in Hybrid | New Cars | Toyota UK

Now can you see why the Outlander PHEV is selling like hot cakes.

Just saw one yesterday, and local dealer has many, but what else would be on a Mitsubishi lot?;)

It sold 16.7k last year. Its closest competitor in terms size and form is the Chevy Spark, which sold nearly 40k in the same time period.
The projected US price sounds high, but a conversion of the UK price is $15k to $5k higher.

According to Cars.com, Gen 1 Volts are down to 4839 left. Autotrader has 2559 of their listings left.

Cost is just part of the equation.

Right now, I'm in Munich, Germany. Talking about getting first-hand research about audience. The European situation for plugging in faces many challenges, in addition to the issues related to driving... road & parking space, along with pollution from the large number of diesel vehicles.

Yesterday, I visited the BMW plant. It's quite clear they achieved what GM did not. They too faced high cost, but the decision was made to focus on making the design practical instead.

This next-gen Volt is clearly a specialty configuration, not one for the masses. Look back at the original goals. Look at what i3 delivered.

btw, I've seen a ton of Prius+ (the European wagon model) used as taxis during my travel. And yes, I even saw a Prius PHV.

Huh? The BMW i3 with range extender is $46,000 MSRP vs $33,000 MSRP in the USA for the new 2016 Volt or $34,000 for the 2015 Volt.

How does this make the i3 Rex more "practical" and less of "speciality configuration" than the Volt?

The i3 Rex is also 37 mpg EPA highway vs. 40 for the 2015 Volt (2016 Volt highway unknown). EV EPA range is 72 miles for i3 Rex vs. ~50 for the 2016 Volt. That's a nice boost but then you are paying more for that bigger battery which in the past you would have characterized as being grossly too large. The i3 Rex is also notably underpowered for extended hill climbing in USA range extended mode.

Given your emphasis on "mass-market" needs I'm puzzled why you would praise the much more expensive BMW and diss the Volt in comparison to it.
