Rob. I am curious about this, too. I will likely be ordering a cable from you within the next week and would prefer all black as well, if it's an option. If not, the yellow will not deter me. :)

Rob43's adapter has been working well for me with Toyota EVSE part number G9060-47190 for the past few days. Build quality is excellent, thanks Rob!

Hi Rob, Thanks so much for all your work with this setup and especially for the professional quality adapter cords you make. I was very pleased with your workmanship and can't imagine why anyone would want to gather the parts and assemble themselves for the price you sell and ship them. Works great! Very fun to charge in less than half the time. Jim

I received my custom all-black Rob43 adapter a few days ago. I had a brand new NEMA 14-50 receptacle installed just for this purpose. My electrician, who I've known and used for years, advised me not to use the adapter. Obviously he doesn't know all the details of the project, as I (and I think nearly everyone here) had the same apprehension when I first discovered the device on this forum. My point of this is, if you are going to use the adapter, do the research and make sure that you are comfortable with using it.

I am comfortable with using the adapter because I have seen picture of the OEM Toyota charger taken apart and showing wiring for L2 charging. I also analyzed the receptacle wiring diagrams in this thread and understand what the Rob43 adapter is actually doing. Also, Rob43 has been great during this process, helping me with any remaining questions.

So here it is, my all-black Rob43 adapter. This baby has cut my charging time from 5 hours and 30 minutes to 2 hours and 30 minutes. The outlet install cost $400, so this entire setup ran me $449. I am very happy with the build quality and price of the Rob43 adapter. It looks great and is built very well with thick gauge wire. Thanks for everything, Rob!

Hey Rob43,so I shipped a US Prius prime to Europe including the charger that cam with the car,do you think just using a adapter (see the pic)would work to be able to charge at home(220v)?

My first thought would be no. This is based off of my testing of a similar device that got way to hot, some people using this device got major melting which could have turned into something far worse.

In Europe you'd be putting roughly ~2800* watts through that plastic adapter for 2 1/2 hours, For you & your family to be really safe, you'd want your adapter to be rated at about 3500 watts using the 80% rule. (3500 x 0.80 = 2800)

If it doesn't say what it's rated for, buy something better...

EDIT: I just looked it up, it's only rated for 1875 watts. This type of adapter is typically used for simple devices like your electric shaver.

    * Assuming that it's passing 230 volts through it, if it's only delivering 115 volts then it should be ok, but your charge time will be about 5 1/2 hours. The website does not directly say.

    After a bit more research:

I found a high quality European Schuko Plug that is designed to operate at 4000 watts. This Schuko plug is a male plug that needs to be wired to work. I could build it for you with a 2 foot long pure copper cord and finish it with the needed 5-20R end so that you can plug your Toyota OE EVSE into it for fast charging. I would need to order this part, just let me know if you want a very high quality adapter.

^ Your 240v plug choice is fine, now just buy yourself a 10 AWG cord and 5-20R receptacle.

Your goal should be safety, you never want any heat build up. Please spend more for quality parts.

    rhfritz,
Are you using your wife's original PIP charger with the pigtail, for her PIP, or the Prime's EVSE? I have a PIP that I'm considering getting the pigtail to use with the original EVSE since many evenings a faster charge would let me take the kids to sports on 100% EV.

Just to report that I made my own pigtail as well and I’ve been happily charging on 240v for a week. I initially checked every part of the setup and nothing felt even remotely warm to the touch.

Kudos to all who have contributed to this topic!

    Congrats.

I can tell by looking at your picture that you are not using 10 AWG cord, are you using 12 or 14 AWG ?

Hello To all and Happy New Year!
I bought 2013 Prius plug in on 31th December. which will be shipped out in 2 weeks and i will get it in 2 month, I live in Georgia (not state)
so, here we have 220v outlets, and i recently bought from Ebay EV car charger, oem from subaru 120v 12a type 3. i think in USA it will work without problems, but here it need something to start work, also we dont have ground/earthing here.

my question is what can i do with easiest and cheapest way to make my charger useful?
p.s. please write and describe, as easier english as u can, because it's difficult to understand all points when u are using professional words. thank you

    Welcome to PC.
I don't have a specific answer to your question but the pic you posted sure looks like the OEM TOYOTA L1 EVSE. Only Subaru car that I know that uses charge cord is the recently introduced Crosstrek PHEV which has the same EV system as Prius PRIME (PHV in EU). If it is the same as Toyota OEM it should work fine with 220V with an appropriate adaptor if needed. About ground prong, I am not knowledgable enough to comment, but I am sure others will chime in soon. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I am about adaptor- which one is the best from practice, and mostly used by electric car owners. there are some people who can adjust some oem chargers (volt, nissan leaf and other), there are opening it and doing some soldering jobs with transistors , resistors and etc (i am not good in electric system) , i asked also them, but they are looking this charger first in their life lol. I did not know about Subaru ev too, before i made bid on that charger :))) p.s. they made that car in 2019

Again not being very knowledgeable, I can't give you a specific advise, but if your Subaru EVSE is from the US, it is safe to assume it came from 2019 Subaru Crosstrek PHEV, which means it is identical to Toyota OEM L1 EVSE currently used for Prius Prime (aka Prius PHV). If that is the case, the adapter with Nema 5-20P Amp female plug to whatever your countries outlet receptacle should work if constructed well with quality parts like the one @Rob43 offers in the US with NEMA 10-50P Amp male plug with 10 gauge pure copper wire in between. If you can not source the parts locally, you may want to contact @Rob43 directly to see if he is willing to make you one and ship it to you abroad.
