The $15 k, 2017 BMW i3-REx fully meets my requirements and is giving the 2019 Tesla battery relief. The short wheel base makes it a nice urban, pocket rocket.

That is the least of my worries. I recently picked up two trenches at the current, low stock prices. You know, buy low and sell high. But I prefer Tesla technology and not just their cars.

I bought my shares low too. I like the company tech also. Powerwall sales are slow steady growth... Solar roof has my eye....and hey just like Roaring Kitty...."I just like the stock."

In my hybrid SUV Rav4 I have driven 33k+ miles since July 6th of 2019. Paid $2342.11 in fuel. 7 cents a mile. Depreciated $7,500 during 4.8 years (Cash purchase price versus KBB as good condition). So figure ~$500 a year in fuel and ~$1,600 in depreciation. That is mighty cheap. OTOH, that purchase money would have made money if invested. But I like no debt sleeping.

I can fit 4 cart sized golf bags and 4 big guys in the car and drive 50 miles to the golf course every week and still have 400 miles of range when I come home and no need to fuel up for another several weeks or maybe months.

I have conventional controls. At 81 I value that. Couldn't consider a Highland M3 for that reason.

I have an assisted driving suite that will help when I want to drive my wife on divided highways at 6:30 AM tomorrow to the airport. (It just works, no need for constant OTA updates. No desire to have it drive my car is urban jungle traffic. I really miss it on her Avalon.

If it has a problem (it hasn't once it got over its teething problems of a typical first year build all fixed at zero cost to me) the dealer is 2 miles up the road, will give me a ride back home.

I'm in the market for 4 new tires just because I want the best rain safety you can get. I could legally drive on the OEM tires for another 2 years. And a new 12V battery not because anything is wrong with mine. It is good for another 2 years but why push it beyond 5 years. Those preferences I can't charge to the car, just the fussy driver.

We have another 600 mile range hybrid that gets better MPG and is more comfortable for long trips. And a battery powered golf cart that I use to visit neighbors.

I could do just fine on a 250 mile range EV that had the 4 people plus the cargo capacity I described above. I'd have to install wiring for a charger but I want one for house resale value. Cost $3k for the wiring plus charger for my house. I'm more than eligible for any tax rebates.

With luck I'm a few years away from some multi-stage assisted/progressive living arrangement and no guarantee there are chargers available there. Maintaining a big house and yard is getting old.

    Different strokes.

I'm starting to see long range Tesla's Model 3's with around 100k miles for around $16,000.

Checking their CarFax they don't have any accidents or other problems. They check out perfectly. These are cars that the dealers have lowered their price a few times. It looks like to me that EV's new and used have moved from the low supply/high demand to high supply/low demand.

I guess that interest has slowed, perhaps people are afraid of used EV's again like back when I bought my Leaf. It had all 12 battery bars and was in mint condition, yet I got it for 1/4 of the original price only 3 years old and with hardly any miles on it back in 2018, and when I sold a year later it had dropped quite a bit again. When the early adopters have all bought their EVs then the EV sellers have to sell to the general public, and we're a bit more picky.

if the new model 3's don't qualify for the $7,500. tax credit, that makes used an even better deal.

That's what I'm wondering. But some do say that the price includes the federal incentive. So I guess it's already included in the price.

The nice thing about living in Colorado is I can take another $4,000 off of that, assuming the car doesn't already include the state incentive in the price.

Note in this one that it mentiones including incentives in price, but also that the price has come down 3 times during the past month.

    • GOOD
    • FAST
    • CHEAP
With patience, in 2024 you can get GOOD and CHEAP. In 2019, I chose GOOD and FAST and used trade-in for CHEAP. Hopefully, lesson's learned and shared by others will make your transitions easier.

Why do you need parts for a new car - especially a Toyota? ;)

    Who qualifies

You may qualify for a credit for buying a previously owned, qualified plug-in electric vehicle (EV) or fuel cell vehicle (FCV), including cars and light trucks, under Internal Revenue Code Section 25E.

    To qualify, you must:

    • Be an individual who bought the vehicle for use and not for resale
    • Not be the original owner
    • Not be claimed as a dependent on another person's tax return
    • Not have claimed another used clean vehicle credit in the 3 years before the purchase date
In addition, your modified adjusted gross income (AGI) may not exceed:

    • $150,000 for married filing jointly or a surviving spouse
    • $112,500 for heads of households
    • $75,000 for all other filers

I easily qualify but I've already bought a 2023 and a 2020 GMC in the last 4 years, and so absenting a change in ownership for either of those two I'm out of the market for a few more years at least.

I'm very sorry to hear about that.

I'm something of a critic of Toyota's corporate culture and I've never thought that they were worth the princely price that people are paying for them, but I HAVE tried to come back to the flock on several occasions for a REASON.

I wish car quality issues on NO PERSON - most particularly when repair parts are unavailable!!
