I think it certainly will. The pace of development could quicken as well. This is really a HUGE strategic issue for countries without large amounts of oil (ie, most countries). It's about time it started being addressed.

The Air Force has been testing B52's for compatibility with a wide range of "synthetic" fuels. CTL and BTL derived fuels mixed with standard JP-8 in various ratios. It's all an attempt at reducing the strategic threats to the military's fuel supply.

Mechanical Engineers design weapons. Civil Engineers design targets. :p :D

I feel guilty just reading this thread.
I don't deny the advances of military I just don't celebrate it. I guess I'm not an american.

For the record, as if anyone cared, one of my sons is a Sergent in the Army, has done two tours (so far) to Iraq, and will probably be deployed to Afganistan, next time.
Another son spent 7 years in the Army Natl. Guard, "playing" with Howitzers.
My Dear Hubby did his time in the Navy, running supplies to forces during the Gulf war.

I stand by my original posting. You all can read into it anything you like (as, you all have)... I think that it is sad that it takes war, and killing, to bring innovation in technology.

I don't think anyone's disagreeing with that (I'm certainly not). I too was in the artillery for a while (a sergeant as well). I think that we're seeing the paradigm shift (a little at least). There have been many amazing developments outside of the military sphere over the last decade or more. Of course, many of those developments will have military applications (like the one's being discussed here), but their genesis was not the result of military demand.

Hermann Lemp patented an improved control system for a Diesel (or gasoline) / electric locomotive transmission system in 1917. The ICE turns a generator which powers electric motors geared to the wheels. There was no method of storing power such as the batteries in a hybrid car.

Rail Power Technologies has been building hybrid locomotives since ~2000. A small Diesel engine / generator charges a large storage battery. ~2000hp is available for traction with the battery being charged by an engine putting out about 700hp.

The only thing that seems to be new about the army's idea is that it is being used in combat vehicles.

The Tesla is not a commuter car ... for the masses. The Governator also believes in Hydrogen in its current implementation. He's an idiot. Wiyosaya has an excellent point that it's going to take the [Machoistic idea of the] Military to make Hybrid technology seem feasible for the undereducated masses.
