No need to guess. The fan shouldn't run until coolant temperature exceeds the normal operating high... which you'll rarely experience in the winter when the heater is needed. In fact, the only time I even get close is when climbing a long hill on the highway. And that's with the lower-grille blocked entirely. So, pretty much never.
