There are many temperatures in a Prius including two engine coolant sensors. These are the temps I monitor through obd2, in this case Car Scanner. There are others in the hvac and battery systems as well.

2012 Prius v Five. On the P12 device, oil temperature is an available to be displayed, OBD2 value, along with other internal and ambient temperatures. I don’t the location of know its sensor origin.

Can you screenshot that? rjparker's screenshot shows some PID information, such as to distinguish "coolant 7C0" from "coolant 7C4".

What I'm wondering isn't limited to the location of the sensor, but extends to whether there is such a sensor, or what the P12 device is showing you as "oil temperature" instead.

Best to inquire with the P12 folks. Brush up on your Mandarin…

Anybody seen any other OBD device that purports to show an "oil temperature" from a 2012 Prius v Five?

Anybody seen such a value in Techstream?

I suspect the Chinese translation of “Transaxle fluid temp” may be “Oil temp”.

Where is the oil temp shown? Where is the sensor on the engine?

Nope. I haven't plugged in aftermarket one stuff since I saw a pro go haywire from a Chinese Bluetooth dongle made the car go bizerk. And techstream doesn't list an oil temp.

A transaxle is a manual transmission.

A transaxle is any unit that combines a transmission (variable ratio power delivery from the engine) plus a final drive axle/differential. Transaxles are what front-engine, front-wheel-drive cars generally have. There can be manual ones, automatic ones, and CVT ones like the Prius has.

OK, I'll bite. How does the eCVT transfer ICE and EMG power to and from the front axles?

They are different and it is not labeled a transaxle

They call it a P410 I think but it acts as a transaxle

I can hardly wait for Azusa to identify where he got the above screenshots, and why any of us ought to consider that source any more reliable than other more traditional ones, such as the Toyota repair manual for the car, for example.

Toyota calls it a transaxle - end of story for most of us. It is amusing that this is the issue in a thread about head gaskets that morphed here after I quoted “Transaxle fluid temp” from a Toyota document describing temperature limits.

I thought electric waterpump in combustion engine is very rare but it appears it’s not. Some BMW, Audi have it also and Corvette C7. Prius was early adopter though. And that it’s re-programmable is so cool. Fascinating car for it’s age
