Transmission Noise?

Did the "whine-like" noise go away after the transaxle drain and fill? When you mean whine, do you mean like a high pitched, screeching sound of metal on metal?

I ask cause, my Gen2 was making a sound that was rotational in nature, at 91K miles in 2011. It only occurred when the vehicle was in motion, and the loudness and rate (frequency) of the sound increased with vehicle speed. Now that I reflect, the closest sound I can think of is Space Invaders; no flying saucer sound, just the background sound as the aliens do their jumping jacks.

I dropped the car off at a Toyota dealership, paid the $100 diagnosis fee, and was later told the transaxle was going bad. No DTC codes, no Triangle of death, no nothing, other than that rotation sound, and a slight decrease in overall MPG. Decisions: new transaxle ($4K), used transaxle ($2k), sell Prius as is and buy a new or used car. But, I had a actual fairy tale ending. The service advisor called a week later, and informed me he got the transaxle covered under the longer California Emissions Warranty (10yr/150K miles emissions warranty), aka CARB Warranty.

Don't know what state you live in (helpful to list this in your profile) and if you bought the car new or used. CARB warranty only applies to CARB states and if vehicle has continually been registered in any CARB state from day 1. If you bought used, and original owner was in a non-CARB state, and you live in a CARB state, no CARB warranty. If your state adopted the CARB standard, you can Internet search what model year the CARB standard takes effect. For example, your state signs CARB into law in 2010, but it takes effect for 2011 model year cars and later.

 

Apparently if you have a mechanical failure like a bad bearing or in the differential section there are no anomalies to trigger a DTC. The mg's are happy no hv leaks or any of that just the screech or whine of bearing failure.

Pretty easy to find just pull the trans fluid and look at it under light. Lots of metal in the fluid.

 

So noise was fixed or no?
That's why you should know one rule " listen all of recommendations but don't do them"!
Sorry but you can spend a lot more mony if you will do all everyone is recommending here
I broke my Prius couple times when was trying to fix with Prius chats people!
The only what is good from this guys is that you can find out price of parts and labor and even this some time is not correct!

Because you've only posted twice so far. No one can see them till a moderator approves them until you have enough posts that they know you're not a bot. But I got a strong whiff of troll in your first post. There's plenty of bad advice in this forum just like every other forum. And there's good advice. That's always the challenge: sorting them out.
