I’ve seen a Toyota document (have a copy here, somewhere…) that says to only use their ATF WS fluid from freshly opened bottles.

Thanks Mendel, as always very valuable info in our forum. I also heard that ATF-WS is hygrocospic but does not say how long in the sealed bottle we can keep.

It's obvious you don't know what lifetime means.
It means until the warranty expires. They changed it because of epa crap.
But you change it at 60,000 miles? If it's lifetime, and YOU say it doesn't change,
even though it gets cooked in a hot transmission, WHY would you change it?

Suddenly, at 5 years the oil is no good?

My first Pirus 2006 have a transmission fluid change recommended by my dealership every 100k miles or 6y. My car runs fine until I sold it at 220k miles. The Prius 2 transmission has a weak point on the needle bearings and still use some chain mechanism inside. The Prius 3 is much more reliable. The ATF-WS in hybrid works much less compared to 6 or 8 speed torque converter type transmission. It does not have to flow and spin really fast as a fluid coupling between engine to the wheel. Hybrid only have a spring damper to the flywheel, no clutch materials either. I am a car enthusiast and change the ATF just because I want. That's why Toyota does not say anything about Transmission fluid change in the owner manual or service schedule, like Mendel said. I think changing the fluid in the transaxle is more important in hybrid than ATF. Just like clean and lubricate the brakes more important than just stupid European 2 yearly brake fluid change.

It's a clutch with clutch material.... Did you think it was metal on metal?

Calm down man. Prof. Kelly shows clearly that gen 3 does not have clutch (friction materials). All just gear rubbing gear on bearings. Only the damper (spring disc) connect directly to the ICE and it has no clutch either. Clutch by definition is friction materials to grab other parts to move together with it. But you may be right defining the damper disc as metal on metal clutch. But this damper is not exposed to ATF. it is dry.
