Hello, I have a simple question and I have searched Priuschat an did not find the answer and this thread seems like a perfect place to ask it. I am passing my 07 Prius down to my kid and it has 220+K on it. I have never changed the transaxle fluid and I just drive it every day with no problems. Should I get it changed or is this something like you should not fix it, unless it's broke?

    Change it.

I'm gonna get flamed, but use Toyota ATF WS. There's pretty much ONE instance in the Owner's Manual where Toyota get's insistent, and the the transaxle fluid spec is it. 4 quarts or liters should do. If you're getting an independent mechanic to do it, maybe supply him the fluid.

It's a simple drain and fill. Refill with the car level, and when it starts coming back out, that's the correct level.

A fair price would be around $80. Anything over $100 is a rip off.

I paid 43 EUR for four quarts of Toyota ATF WS, I don't see why you would need to buy something else. It isn't very expensive, and the oil change service shouldn't be either. Its very straightforward and doesn't take much time.

So.. Ive been doing transmission ( Transaxle) fluid exchanges on my own Prius as well as all generations excluding Gen 1
Ok... Good stuff! In my experience the prius has been SUCH a solid and reliable example of a workhorse daily driver vehicle. And as far as the transmission "transaxle" is concerned, i have been using Valvoline Maxlife synthetic ATF on mine as well as my customers gen 2 and above standard, plugin, and C models for 60,000 miles and over with no problems or complaints! Deffinately not saying Valvoline makes the BEST fluids for all vehicles... But did want to say that the prius platform is extremely versatile and well engineered to last a very long time with regular maintenence, with basic caution towards fluid reccomend ations.
