Re: Recall of 3.8 Million Toyotas - Not the '10 though

Per the Toyota site. Steps to take:

Should the vehicle continue to accelerate rapidly after releasing the accelerator pedal, this could be an indication of floor mat interference. If this occurs, Toyota recommends the driver take the following actions:

First, if it is possible and safe to do so, pull back the floor mat and dislodge it from the accelerator pedal; then pull over and stop the vehicle.

If the floor mat cannot be dislodged, then firmly and steadily step on the brake pedal with both feet. Do NOT pump the brake pedal repeatedly as this will increase the effort required to slow the vehicle.

Shift the transmission gear selector to the Neutral (N) position and use the brakes to make a controlled stop at the side of the road and turn off the engine.

If unable to put the vehicle in Neutral, turn the engine OFF, or to ACC. This will not cause loss of steering or braking control, but the power assist to these systems will be lost.

-If the vehicle is equipped with an Engine Start/Stop button, firmly and steadily push the button for at least three seconds to turn off the engine. Do NOT tap the Engine Start/Stop button.

-If the vehicle is equipped with a conventional key-ignition, turn the ignition key to the ACC position to turn off the engine. Do NOT remove the key from the ignition as this will lock the steering wheel.

    -----------------

Man this is tough to remember and perform while screaming.

Could someone enlighten me? Our 07 Prius has factory floor mats with clips to keep the floor mat from creeping forward.

    So what's the problem?

Has Toyota provided mats without these clips?

Besides, the Prius gas pedel is far enough above the floor to make it pretty hard to see where the floor mat could slide over the pedal.

Our '04 has hooks that hold the floor mats in place, so I don't get how it could ever get under the pedal ... sometimes it's even a little tough to get the driver's mat off the hook! So ... what with 100 reported cases, one would presume that shoving the shifter into 'N' isn't necessarily a "knee-jerk" first response? ... or holding the power button down?

    Re: Prius Recall ('04 - '09)

From one of the articles on this (from SignOnSanDiego.com):

I have a 2001 Sienna as well as our 2007 Prius: BOTH have properly clipped mats which came with the car!

So where's the problem? Aftermarket mats? Why is that such a big recall?

Answer: because Toyota want's to make sure their customer's cars are OK. Besides, the inspection is quick and they probably can sell "safe" (clipped) mats where the customer is using unclipped ones.

70,000+ miles... been in use since Nov 13, 2003.... and even have weather mats over the extra floor mats... not even one little problem......

And, yes it was hard removing the floor mat off that hook... so these people that are having the problem not using the hooks???

Not sure, but some cars may ot have had the clips, or had the wrong mats.

I figured it out (in another thread):

It's an easy check - and besides it gives the dealers an opportunity to sell the correct floor mats to customers who have offending floor mats.

My mats in my 07 are properly clipped and non-interfering. I have PT208 series...not the offending ones (PT908...)

I was wondering if the problem occurs only when the mat slips off the hook, because on my 2002 my one complaint is that the mat often slips off the hook too easily, and indeed it starts to bunch up to the right. It's come close once or twice to interfering with the brake or gas pedals. However, the Gen 1 2001-2003's are not part of this recall, and in any case if the solution is to remove the floormat, I can do this myself.

    Re: Prius Recall ('04 - '09)

I didn't even want the Toyota mats when I purchased my 07 Prius new, because they were so expensive but the Dealer said they wouldn't sell it without them. So basically I had to pay for something I didn't want in the first place and now there is a recall associated with them?

I agree, although if you read the San Diego newspaper article it would appear that the real issue is non OEM floor mats binding with the gas pedal.

With my factory mats, the combination of the clips and the way the mat locks in under the left foot rest, I can't see how it can possibly move. Looks to be more of an operator issue than design error to me.

    FYI,

The two clips in my 2010 have an extra burr (like a fish hook) compared to my 2004. This makes them much more difficult to take out for cleaning.

In my previous 2001 there was only one older style hook.

If all my prior ~5 cars (Toyota, Acura, Toyota, VW and Fiat) there were zero hooks.

    Does it have the clips?

If so, they were probably already installed - so the dealer did not want to take them out (clips punch holes in the regular carpet).

If not (properly installed), you do have a beef!

Totally agree .... my 2008 Prius has the clips and slots snugly under the left foot rest; there is simply no way that mat is going anywhere! In fact it makes removing it quite a trick.

Re: Recall of 3.8 Million Toyotas - Not the '10 though

Just a thought. I would guess that Toyota uses similar "floating" accelerator pedal configuration in all affected models. Mats, at least ones without the hold-downs could slip forward and lodge into the pedal.

OK, this said - don't other manufacturers face the same issue? I mean most, if not all, now use the floating pedal - ie not attached to the floor with the pivot there.

Just wondering why this may only affect Toyota. Or has it happened to other manufacturers before and corrected? Or ticking time bomb?

Wasn't a Toyota mat though. It was aftermarket. It's still puzzling as to why the officer wasn't able to figure out what was happening or to find a way to stop.

I've had my foot get stuck on the edge of the console when wearing boots and not be able to lift off...but it wasn't hard to figure out what was happening and adjust my foot.

So what was the floor mat? Was it a Toyota "factory" with clips? Or something else? Or was it a different (non-Toyota) car entirely?
